Stock I3570k temp

Changed the case, think the cpu cooler is loose. Had to tighten the brackets just so it could power up.

Depending on overclock and settings (i.e. whether its reducing voltage at idle or not) and the weather generally you should see idle temperatures below 40C max - 60-70 should be full load temperatures on air.

Mine with a Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 4 on it will only ever exceed 60 degrees on a hot summers day

Fakedit missed the no load bit, this is when gaming

Clean out the thermal paste and reapply.
While the heat sink is off clean the fan and hoover the heat sink.
Check the rear fan behind it is ejecting air from the case rather than sucking it in.

Removed the cooler, cleaned it out and put it back into place. idles around 50-53. I need to reapply some paste. Haven't done this in a while, how do you remove the old paste?

I just grab some paper towels and wipe the old paste off. Unless it's one of those that could scratch up the HS/Fan, then I'd use some surgical spirit and cotton wool or buds and dab it until it's all off.

Tried to run a game, it turned off. Now it boots into Windows but turns off.

Checked in bios, CPU temp is 95.

Wtf is going on.

Are you sure you have the HS/Fan on properly?

It was clicked in(default Heatsink), not sure if I turned the lugs to lock them though.

But it was the game launch that triggered the high temps. I'm out now, when I get back I'll double check.

Heatsink was on tight, nothing wrong with it. it could be the paste. it's all dried up. I'll order some more.

Idling around 50-55 now.

Under full load it's hitting 104 and shutting down. Not even gaming was some windows stuff.

Could poor thermal paste be the culprit or is something wrong with the CPU?

If the paste is newly applied (and not suspect very old possibly no longer functional), it's unlikely to be the paste acting up. And I believe (in theory) should have some effect at the minimum (again, unless it's very old, and likely flaking off brittle or something).

Stay in Bios screen and watch the temps. If the CPU temp doesn't come down, it's either:

1. HS/Fan still not in full contact with CPU (probably paste issue).
2. Temp detection in the CPU is buggered.
3. Something is shorting under the CPU casuing temperatures to spike. (Possible outcome if HS/Fan was stuck on rather hard to the CPU and it pulled the CPU out a bit when it was removed to reapply paste).

The only time I've had a temp spike that high was on my 3820 when I didn't have enough paste yet (and new batch was arriving in a days time) but needed to test the cpu. So just attached the HS/Fan without paste. Powered it up. Shot to 90+ and shut itself off. Was all because of lack of paste. Applied some crappy leftover to it and it still remained at 85+ but workable in Bios at least.

So from my experience and you saying that the paste may be "old", I'd say paste and HS/Fan still. But do check the others just in case.
