I am trying to repair a laptop that has been dropped. Apperantly it didnt ful too hard
I have replaced the harddrive as it didnt want to boot at all, so I am trying to boot from a windows disc to install XP fresh. I have also checked that the ram and cpu havn't become dislodged, they both seem fine.

Windows install gets as far as the first time it says "Starting Windows" and then BSODs with a error message -

STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000006, 0xF94AEFEA, 0xF8843A14, 0x00000000)

setupdd.sys - Address F94AEFEA base at F948D000, DateStamp 41107c8f

what the hell does that mean! :(

Ok, the main bit you need to look at is the first code: 0x0000008e. The stuff in brackets is just extra information related to that stop code.

Googling the above code brings up:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315335

Which states:

CAUSE
This behavior may occur if one of the following conditions is true:
• One or more of the random access memory (RAM) modules that are installed on your computer are faulty.
• The RAM configuration is incompatible with Windows XP

Looks like the RAM got damaged in the drop too.

Hope that helps.

tried the ram in both slots, and have now tried new ram, again, in both slots. Still getting the same error? Any other ideas? This laptop is doing my head in!
