Sorry didn't check if there were other threads - I'm sure there are, but meh!!

So I'm now 3days in, going cold turkey, after smoking around 15 per day for, erm, about 25yrs.

It's difficult. I've managed to give up for a 3month period before, but driving got me started again. Gonna be 40 this year, and getting my activity up, so smoking has to go. Tried "vaping", but am too disorganised to keep using the thing - gave up before with patches, but tbh after the first week I didn't think they helped, so just decided to do cold turkey this time.

Apologies for pointless thread :)

go get some ecigs m8 i thought i'd never give up im now @ 7 months without a cig and 3 months without an ecig

i notice the cash more than anything im loaded lol good luck and keep strong

My wife just tried giving up cold turkey and lasted 3 days. Hopefully you can keep going. Good luck :)

Cold turkey's cool if you can hack it. Best of luck :)

Personally, I vape because I enjoy smoking, but hate cigs and all the crap that comes with them.

Cheers all - am gonna give it this week cold turkey, and if it's still a daily struggle may give in and try an ecig.

To be honest I've tried a few times, and the last couple of years I got a lot fitter with swimming and MTBing, so I thought this year, with hitting 40 and all, let's do it properly and see how much fitter I can get without needing an Iron Lung on every trail climb :)

These first few days are hard as hell though, I just need to mtfu and get use some willpower to get through it. Thought I'd start this thread as somewhere to vent :)

I am also 3 days into giving up, never thought I could do it but got one of those e-cigs and its been no bother at all.

I also think in a few months it will be easy to give up the ecig too.

Cold turkey is the way to do it. I'm over a year quit now and would never go back.

The best advice for stopping smoking is, don't smoke.

tbh I think this ecig is working wonders for me just now, I don't think it will be a problem to give that up in a bit either.

Just good to get out the routine of buying fags daily just now, when the body needs less nicotine then chuck the ecig too.

The best advice for stopping smoking is, don't smoke.

I do like that :)

I think it's just accepting that it's been a massive part of my life and habits for so long, that it's going to feel weird not nipping out every hour or so for a smoke. Mrs has never smoked, and kids hate it, so that will help.

When I get wound up I think I'll just post some vented feelings in this thread rather than annoy the wife... :D

I gave up following throat cancer not because of health issues, bit late for that. I gave it up as I could no longer afford to smoke 40 fags a day. I had actually given it up during treatment as it tasted foul but went back to it though not as much, some 7 months post treatment.

I needed the help of Varenicline (Chantix) as I would not have managed it on my own I don't think.

Been 5 years now and still get the occasional urge, nothing major and usually during a very rare vodka drinking session.

I have also not become the rabid anti smoker some or rather many ex smokers do, each to there own and it certainly does not bother me if some is smoking in my presence though I no longer allow it in my house as being a now anti smoker I am now fully aware of how nicotine stains everything and what a bugger it is to remove if it is thick as I used to be in my house.

So all the best to you who are trying to give up smoking.

If it's any help what I did years and years ago was simply say the following:

"I am not a smoker".

I did have a cigarette about 4 weeks after giving up but I didn't think I had failed and buy a whole packet because that would be silly as I was not a smoker and just someone who had drunk too much vodka!

It's a psychological shift but once you get it into your head you are not a smoker then it becomes easier. You can't fail any more and regress into something you are not. You don't go to the places smokers do because you are not a smoker you break the routine of smoking because you are not a smoker.

About 4 years since my last cig
No longer getting urges to have another for about the last couple of months. Smell of smoke now disgusts me.

Went cold turkey after a bad chest infection and havent looked back since.

Swapped to e-cigs on 1st October and haven't looked back, apart from NYE when I smashed one tank and wondered what the hell I was going to do. Thankfully had a spare one :D

Already dropped from 18mg down to 12mg after 3 months so it won't be long at this rate before I'm off them altogether :)

Gave up last year on NYD for 6 months, went on holiday and fagged it up and said I would just do it on holiday. Then carried on until NYD this year. I am determined to give it up now. Health is terrible at moment and we are trying for a baby so want/need to be healthy for life now. Cold turkey for me and 6 days in I feel great. Went for a run last night too and my lungs felt good.

I gotta admit I still do, and always have loved smoking. The last couple of colds I've had did leave me with a really nasty chest infection, very bronchitus-like, and I think that the first sign (for me) that it was affecting my health. The thought of it helping with my fitness, and not coughing up gunk all the time - that's a good driving factor.

The money will be a nice bonus, but not the main factor.

Kids and wife - I know it should be the main factor for me, but it never has been. I've always been a fairly courteous smoker, even when it was allowed in buildings.

Getting into a mindset of seeing myself as a non-smoker - that'll be tough, but I can see how it would affect your viewpoint. Going to try that.

These first few days have been tough though.

Tried cold turkey a few years back and it was horrible, ended up shaking & raging after 3 days and I had to go back on the sticks.

Managed to give up for about a year and a half after using the gum. Didn't want to do patches as I was conscious that I needed a process/task to replace taking a smoke out the carton and putting it in my mouth and the action of popping a gum helped that a lot.

Now I'm vaping and that's doing the trick.

The chemical part of the addiction is only part of the battle and you'll need to find something to replace the whole habit, maybe sucking on a lollypop or something similar? ;)
