I need a reliable pair of hard drives for a storage volume. My 500GB WD AAKS drives are filling up fast and I need something larger. Speed and benchmarks are not essential, reliability is the key factor.

Any thoughts? Recommendations?

Thanks in advance :)

I have F1s, but they are not noted for their reliability, I would go for the Western Digital Green powers, that are designed for long life, rather than speed. Can't beat duplication for data protection though, get an extra two and mirror them, or extra one and RAID5.

i agree. i just back up my main bits on an external drive. then if the worst comes to the worst and something makes the pc go completely caput. the external drive wasent plugged in so saved data :)

I'm going to put one inside my main PC, and then one is outside on a backup caddie. I don't see the point of creating a home RAID 1/5 system.
Indeed, I like my backups to be totally independent to my PC - in RAID 1 / 5 configs, if your PSU goes pop all your drives are at risk!

Ok, now that the WD Black editions have had £9 taken off them (thank you!) I'm sorely tempted to get two of the 1GB editions. I have heard that they're a little bit faster / more reliable than the Samsungs so I'm tempted to spend an extra £20 on them.

I do note that they Samsungs probably outsell the WD's so the fault prevalence would be higher....*Hmm..*

I saw two Seagate Barracuda's B-Listed together which with my 10% voucher would have taken their price down to £140 for two.

Went with a pair of the black editions for £203 delivered - W00t!

expensive for raid0! wouldnt wd re3 drives be a lot cheaper? performance would be fairly similar when raided too. There are 250/320/500gb re3's depending on the storage u need.

What do you mean by B-Listed?

rather expensive for storage drives but thats your call, f1 1tb would be my purchase for a large fast drive or even the 1.5TB that will be faster than the black edition drives.

why would you need 2 * 1.5TB tho? Isnt 1.5TB enough, you could get 1 of those and a 640GB WD or something. The black drives are SLIGHTLY faster than normal drives, the 375gb platters in the 1.5tb will be significantly faster. Wrong decision imo.

They're being used for storage mainly. And as said above I can't afford 1.5TB drives.

Ones to be used outside as a copy of another inside my main PC.
