Hi guys me again.

Im scrapping my big 1tb 3.5 inch drive that currently attached into a 5.25 bay below by dvd drive my 830 sammie at the moment is just hanging loose beneath it

Im planning on replacing this with one of these

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-017-ID

which im going to slip my ssd in along with 4 of these

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-138-SA&groupid=1657&catid=1660&subcat=1667

which im going to run off the 4* sata 2 ports leaving my sata dvd drive which i hope to plug into one of the asmedia ports. Ive read the warnings about that not being supported but most places ive read state thats ok. Will try it tonight though just in case.

The 4 laptop drives are going to be used for storage of downloads, music movies and general misc stuff that i seem to accumulate ive got a nice big ram drive that i offload all the windows temp stuff off to to save on constant writes to my 830 too.

So my questions are

Has anyone here actually ran an optical drive off an asmedia port?

Secondly ive got a spare slot and intel sata 6gb/s port going and was thinking about getting an ssd storage drive to put my steam directory on for gaming id really have liked to get another 830 but short of second hand I cant find them and second hand ssds are going to have a much shorter life span so thinking about an 840 instead but what would be best, get a basic model thats got lower writes but high read speeds and use that for steam or get an 840pro and retire the 830 to a steam drive? the 840 basic would be a lot cheaper route but will it slow things down going that route over getting an 840pro? Is an 840pro worth the upgrade over an 830?

Thoughts please guys

Asmedia is just another controller like Marvell, so surely it should work fine with optical drive

As for gaming drive, on my next upgrade i'll be going for a hybrid drive for steam (750gb is something like £80) and offers decent speed compared to HDDs but a lot more space (my steam folder is just under 700gb)

If you're definitely going for SSD though I'd personally get the basic version so it's cheaper and I doubt you'll notice a difference

what capacity are you looking at
what capacity do you have
how big is your steam folder

steam folder currently runs in at about 100gb but ive been uninstalling games as a go along so as to keep the 830 tidy and with plenty of space

I'd be looking at the 250/256gb models which should be fine for what i need and i currently have a 256gb 830 so another 250 would be just about doubling capacity and would also allow me to keep a few more steam titles installed without worrying about filling my main drive and also allowing me to do windows reinstalls as needed without worrying too much about saves and other data, non steam games would probably still be going on my main drive though splitting the load somewhat

Yeah seen that one, but there's none for multiple (i.e 2x 2.5" and 2x 3.5" which i'd prefer) :p

After looking about seen that the asmedia controller is only meant for data (hard drives) according to asus website, so could cause issues with optical drive
