Hi everyone ... I am running windows 7 and my7 d drive is 350 gigs and i have 98 gigs of crap on it but my comp says its 179 gigs how this and how can i clean it and get my space back...Big thanks John

350GB is an odd size for a HDD.

A 350GB HDD would actually be around 326GB (technically GiB) in Windows.

Your HDD is measured in Gigabytes (10^9 bytes) whereas Windows measures in Gibibytes (2^30).

Anyhow, start with CCleaner and give the drive a good clean to get rid of any rubbish:

CCleaner

Never heard to it referred to as that. So you are excused, as I hope, am I . . . :(

Nothing to excuse.

Everyone uses the term Gigabyte (GB) for both.

That's why it's confusing when they buy a 500GB drive and Windows tells them it's 465GB (Gigabytes) when it should say they have 465 GiB (Gibibytes).

I knew the abbreviation was GiB, but never knew it was a Gibibyte.

To the OP:

You say D Drive, It should be C drive, unless you have 2 drives, or a single partitioned drive. This could be where the missing space is.

right this is what i mean some pics

What are the C and E drives? Are they physically different drives? Best way to see is to go into Administrator tools, and Computer management. In Local Storage, it tells you how large each drive is, and how the letters are assigned. You could screenie that for us as well.

PhillyDee..THANKS ..I HAVE ONE hd partitioned into 3..c drive is where windows 7 is ..D is for music and divx and E is windows 7 backup......John

Hi there ..where is Administrator tools..john

John, there might be several things on your drive which won't show up in Windows Explorer: page file or hibernation file, system restore points, files in the Recycle Bin or other hidden files.

I suggest you download a program called WinDirStat. That will show you where all the space is going on your drive. It shows all files and folders, even hidden ones.

It's confusing, and it doesn't exactly help that Windows itself uses GB to mean gibibyte!
