I have a laptop that is working ok apart from the fact that any storage drives added are not visable.

If i plug in an external hdd or usb drive windows installs the drivers but they can't be seen in my computer (All have been formatted). Also the dvd drive is not showing in my computer. I have tried assigning drive letters, it goes through the process as if it is doing it but they still don't show. It seem to be any type of storage drive is not showing. I have tried the so called microsoft fixes which don't work either. I have also tried removing the hdd and installing a fresh copy of windows on a different hdd, bios sees it but but refuses to install windows onto it.

Anyone have any suggestions.

Running win7 home

Btw does you computer run USB 1.0 or USB 2.0/3.0.

The external drives may require more juice? So if you have a dual USB cable with the drivers plug both into the USB slots.

Uses usb 2.0. Also the same with usb pendrives. They used to work just fine and all of a sudden they stopped. Not sure what happened as it's not my laptop. My wife said something about the autostart thing that pops up when you insert a cd.

Have you tried installing/re-installing the chip-set drivers for the laptop as well as looking for any missing USB drivers, if it is a Intel based system goto and run the Driver Update Utility here.

To check for any missing drivers.

Not sure how to do this, could you give me details?

Have checked all usb drivers and they are all there thanks for the link may try it anyway.

Right you will need to re-install the chipset drivers, for this you need to find out what make the laptop is.

CPU-Z or Speccy should give you the right information.

The laptop is Asus X5DIJ

Looks like the

chipset is Intel GL40 rev 07
and
Southbridge is Intel 8280 1 IM (ICH9-M) rev 03

Sorry i didn't make myself clear. I'm not sure how to go about uninstalling and then re-installing the chipset drivers never done this before. Don't know what to look for or where to find them on the laptop.

Ah right mate, dead easy just download the chipset driver and then install, no need to uninstall the original driver.

Here is a step by step mate.

1. Go Here Support For Notebook X5DIJ
2(a). At the OS drop down menu select Windows 7 64 or 32 bit depending on what OS you are running.
2(b). To find out what OS you are running select the Start menu on the desktop, and right click on Computer and select properties from the menu. Under System Type you should see either 64-bit Operating System or 32-bit Operating System.
3. After selecting the correct OS, select Chipset.
4. Select Global.
5. Unzip or Extract (using windows 7 inbuilt extractor or WinRAR) the downloaded file.
6. Open the file and run Setup.
7. Job done.

Well i tried that and it is still the same. Thanks anyway.;)

I have noticed that if i boot into safe mode i am able to assign a drive letter and it is fine. Only when i boot up normal mode afterwards it is back to not showing. When i try it in normal mode it shows for a couple of seconds then dissapears from my compuer again.

Anything else you can suggest would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry mate all out here, you could try and run a Ubuntu Linux liveCD to see if this sees the HDD's, if this does not then it is most likely a hardware fault.

Ubuntu Linux liveCD

Thanks for all your help anyway.;)

I thought it may be a hardware fault in the begining, but when they are available in safe mode made me think otherwise.

Ah ye good point, if you have the proper recovery disks for the laptop, try and install linux double check you can see them, then try installing windows again, once done load the drivers in the following sequence:

1. Chipset Drivers.
2. Intel Management Engine.
3. Intel VGA Driver.
4. LAN Driver.
5. Wireless Network Driver.
6. Audio Driver.
7. Bluetooth Driver.
8. Touchpad Driver.
9. Media Card Reader Driver.
10 . Camera Drivers.

After this update/Install the following:

1. Flash.
2. Java.
3. DirectX.
4. Run Windows update.

Let me know how that goes fella.

Regards.
