Storage Spaces VS NAS

wow a lot of synology/qnap users on here.
Don't you find them expensive for what they are ?

for example I've just googled the 918+ mentioned above and its £500!!

you can build yourself a very nice NAS for that money with much greater flexibility, or is it the plug and play nature of them that appeals to all ?

FWIW my (recently upgraded) nas consists of
Server case ~ 100
superflower 350w PSU ~ £40
supermicro motherboard ~ £100 (2nd hand ebay, but was unused, included CPU)
16GB ECC RAM ~ £100 (2nd hand ebay)
SATA/SAS Card - £40 ebay (2nd hand)
This can hold up to 15 drives

my previous system was built with much cheaper components
Case - £50
S1155 board ~£50
pentium CPU ~ £30
14Gb non ECC DDR3 RAM, honest can't remember price, probably about £50/60
the above raid card (£40)

I've ran both of these using free NAS software (there are various ones you can use I won't go in to that here though)

I just like the simplicity of the setup.

My primary unit snapshots and backs up to the secondary, and then my iMac picks up the important bits and stuffs it up to BackBlaze.

I can just forget about it.
