wow a lot of synology/qnap users on here.
Don't you find them expensive for what they are ?
for example I've just googled the 918+ mentioned above and its £500!!
you can build yourself a very nice NAS for that money with much greater flexibility, or is it the plug and play nature of them that appeals to all ?
FWIW my (recently upgraded) nas consists of
Server case ~ 100
superflower 350w PSU ~ £40
supermicro motherboard ~ £100 (2nd hand ebay, but was unused, included CPU)
16GB ECC RAM ~ £100 (2nd hand ebay)
SATA/SAS Card - £40 ebay (2nd hand)
This can hold up to 15 drives
my previous system was built with much cheaper components
Case - £50
S1155 board ~£50
pentium CPU ~ £30
14Gb non ECC DDR3 RAM, honest can't remember price, probably about £50/60
the above raid card (£40)
I've ran both of these using free NAS software (there are various ones you can use I won't go in to that here though)
