Strange 8800 issue

Hi, i upgraded my pc recently to an e4300 oc'ed to 3.15ghz with 2gb of RAM and an 8800 gts 320mb oc on an abit Fatality 650i board, clean install of xp sp2.

I've noticed a really strange slowdown in a couple of games, sometimes oblivion slows down to a crawl for no obvious reasons, minimize to windows and back and its running like greased lightning again.

Company of heroes also has the exact same issue but it tends to happen straight away and wont go away until i minimize it and restore.

I thought it could be my emu soundcard, for some reason its not keen on the cpu being overclocked (system sounds crackle) so i disabled it, also tried older and newer drivers for pretty much everything.

Cant really think of much else and i'd really appreciate a better informed opinion :)

Cheers

Hmm, have you tried running fraps whilst this takes place. It might be that your fames are just fine but the mouse is all over the place, hence the jerkiness. Sometimes alt-tabbing resolves this in games ( ravens shield vegas being one). If the frames are smooth while its jerking then its not performance.

if its not that I am not sure what to suggest

Could be hitting the memory limit on the card, and when coming out of the game and going back will clear it, but then it will crawl again when it fills back up, sounds strange though as i have no problems with Oblivion maxed out, i use 2xAA/16xAF + HDR and supersampling, runs amazing, so i can't really see it being that tbh.

Have you tried reducing the overclock on the CPU, tried it back at stock. :)

ive had this problem before, it was spyware though causing the FPS to dip down to crap every so often maybe every 10-20 seconds.

I seem to have got it again in vista but dont think i have any spyware

Cheers for the replies, its definitely the rendering speed thats getting reduced, oblivion's fps count goes right down, i did think it could be some spyware but im pretty well protected and ive reinstalled xp a couple of times now.

It's not video memory either, i've tried loads of different detail settings and the problem is identical.

The only other thing is my Abit fatality motherboard, its the new nforce 650i one and its full of bugs, i have clocked everything back to stock just to be sure.

3dmark doesnt seem to be affected, i've had it running for hours.

Much confusion

what PSU do you have mate ?

Hiper Type-r 580w, should be enough to cope with just the one card, i'm only running two hard drives and a dvd burner, i have read a few dodgy reports about them tho.

Seems i'm alone, makes me think my motherboard could be the problem but no one in the Abit Fatality fp-in9 sli thread has mentioned anything similar.

No one else?

It sounds like CPU throttling to me, as that could be 'cured' by minimising the game for a few seconds (the temps would drop very fast). I think 85c is the throttle point for Conroes. What cooling are you using, and what temps are you getting?

If your mobo reports temps anywhere near 70c, then it might be a good idea to install TAT (Intel thermal analysis tool) to show if the cpu is throttling.

Hmm, i dont think its heat, the abit tool only reads 55-60c under load which is about right judging by the heatsink, when abit send out a new firmware chip (botched flash) i'll make try disabling the thermal cut off in the bios.

Cheers tho

i agree with the throttleing thingy..

one of my friends has a E6300 at 3.4ghz on air the mad so and so, and in his house the fire place is allways stoked up with coal, and it was reaching over 80c and it just instantly lagged and some times the game would just freeze then kind of re-load its self back up it would drop fps then freeze, then come back 1 fps at a time some how, then when it reached about 5fps it would shoot up

If abit tool is reading 60 under load true core temp is more like 70 or more!!!! I reckon u should take sir randoms advice and check temps with tat. :) Plus i would not disable thermal cut of in the bios u might melt your chip, instead download this app to check if proccessor is throttling http://www.techspot.com/download400.html

I get this on some games... mainly stalker, the framerate gradually start dropping but a quick visit to the video settings in game it speeds up again, temps are maybe reaching a max of 60 on the cpu so I doubt its that. Doesnt seem to happen in most games though

Dont worry about stalker :P its coded to do that :) i.e coded badly :p

Yep thats what happens to me in Stalker but Company of Heroes is slow from the first run on a cold boot, to be honest i dont think the cpu would have time to get to 70c and after tabbing to windows and back it runs fine for ages.

I tried clocking everthing down to stock settings again and reseated the ac freezer 7 and got the same result, temps never hardly ever get over 50c under load at 1.8ghz.

I have heard the abit tool could be misleading but surely not by 25c, tho you never know..

No bios chip from abit yet so i cant test anything else :(

Exactly the same happens to Tom|nbk in Stalker, it can't be the memory as it only uses about 290/300.

Well my pc is up and running again so i tried Throttle Watch and my cpu doesnt show any signs of slowing down.

Almost completely out of ideas now, looks like i'll just have to wait around till some newer drivers come out :\
