Hi all,

I'm hoping someone can offer some advice on this problem. It's easier to explain if I just show you a picture;

monitor.jpg

about 1/5th of the right hand of the screen has stopped working aswell as a 1 inch strip along the bottom, but it's not actually cutting any of the picture off. Instead, the computer has squashed the resolution inside the working part of the LCD. So, where the time on the taskbar is usually in the bottom right, it is now moved over a few inches to the left. I hope that makes sense.

It does it from a cold boot, not just when it is in windows.

Any ideas what this could be? Warranty ran out last month aswell!

Since it does it at cold boot.. Couple of things it could be i think.

1. Could be the cable which connects the screen with the gfx card. It might have got snagged at the hinges and has broken one of the lines. You could take off the top covers and check that the connector is securely fastened to the motherboard. Also try taking off the covers at the hinges (normally have to do this to get in at the motherboard anyway)

2. The most likely thing is that the screen has given up the ghost :(. There are companies which can supply screens as spares but they arent that cheap.

Just to confirm - does it do the same thing when in the bios?

Cheers

Thanks for the quick reply! Yes, it does it in the BIOS aswell. I've tried connecting the laptop to another monitor, which displays the image fine. I'll strip it apart and have a look at the things you suggested.

Its a good sign that an external monitor works from the VGA port - you can rule out the gfx card for now!

Deffo looks like it could possibly be that cable issue then. Try Header then trace the cable back into the screen :).
