Strange performance issue with new build - Sapphire R9 290X Tri-X

Thanks. Ill try it. I only turned the overdrive on because someone suggested that it may fix this issue. Judging by internet info Im not the only one so I am waiting for Saphire to comment:)

U tried afterburner and increasing power limit perhaps or somit where u can set it to control max power when using games somehow. Tho u shouldn't need to.

In windows it isn't using a balanced power profile or anything is it?

Hmm in ur pic it states power is limited to 20% in overdrive settings can u increase that to more and does it help if u do?

windows power profile is set to high performance.

This overdrive setting goes to 20% max. I think only r9 290 and up go to 50%. Im not particularly familiar with Catalyst. Right now its bog standard except overdrive.

Im still baffled as to why cold boot and restart are triggering different GPU behavior. Its weird. Something in BIOS?

I've changed Catalyst 3D settings to High Performance and at least Control Center is very quick now while it was lagging before. No idea what this setting does though :)

I read about ahci issues in latest and drivers readme. Maybe related I dunno. Check drivers perhaps and see if its on in bios. Also give windows update a go see if anything there that updates may help.

Yeah was gona say check profiles there to see about max performance options.

Aye - noticed it as well but those ahci issues seem to be related to AMD chipsets? (Im on Intel).

I do have a weird feeling that those problems started after installing Intel chipset drivers. After Windows install everything was stupidly fast. Then there was an update called Intel management Engine Interface and I have a weird feeling that it may have something to do with my issues. How the hell I can diagnose it?

EDIT - unless Ill try another win install and test it without any updates first.

Decided to do another fresh install. This time i will install GPU drivers last. And move my RAM from slots 1 and 3 to 2 and 4. Just in case. I have no idea what else to try.

Question:

- Are there GPU power settings somewhere in 4.12 drivers? Cant see them anywhere.

- is it ok to instal GPU drivers last? So all windows updates first then GPU?

Thats pretty much it. I've run out of ideas :)

EDIT: I looked at Event Log and it seemed ok - there were no critical errors. I'll check it again tonight. is there anything particular I should look for?

D

Normally I install LAN drivers, reboot, then GPU drivers, reboot, then updates and what not.

I used to own (technically still do but don't use them) two Tri-X 290X's and did probably 3 or 4 rebuilds, never had the same issue as you have.

Can u try it on a diff PC or a diff os. If it happens still that way I would RMA it but talk to ocuk support first through its cs subforum section.

Hi guys, this one has me stumped, hoping someone might be able to shed some light!

I haven't done enough testing to prove anything - but it seems to be from a cold boot - GPU performance will be really bad, on the order of 50% of normal fps in games and bench scores, the Unigine benchmarks will trigger the "AMD Display Driver stopped working...", and there are regular direct x crashes in games. All manner of nastiness.

BUT, a simple restart and everything is fine. Really good bench scores, great FPS, perfect stability.

i7 4770K
Asus Z87-Plus
Sapphire R9 290X Tri-X OC
Avexir Gold series 8Gb - set with XMP profile in bios
Corsair RM750 PSU
Corsair Hydro H75 cooler
Samsung 840 EVO 250Gb

Totally virgin build, there's nothing else in there. Fresh install of 8.1 x64, legit license - no KMS activator or anything like that. Does the same thing with 13.12 or 14.1 beta drivers.

Don't think it's anything to do with the 290X - it seems to work as it should in my old 2600/P8-Z68V system.

I'm a bit suspicious of the Corsair RM750 - I don't like how the fan almost never runs and it does get quite warm.

I've never come across anything like this before. If anyone can give me any ideas I'd be really grateful!

I'd recommend trying first adding more voltage to the card using afterburner, say add another +25mv. Does this fix the issue? If not then I'd try a different power supply.

Might also be worth trying different pci-e cables too. :)

I didnt touch any overclocking options yet - apart from this OverDrive option in CCC but it made no difference. Ill make sure that UPLS is disabled when Ill try Afterburner tonight.

Thanks:)
