Hi

Since I installed my new 4870x2 last week my pc seems to be struggling to boot up. You press the power button and everything comes on as normal but the boot up does not start.....you can here the fans speedup for a few seconds, then they slow down again then back up again...it may do this 3 or 4 times then it suddenly kicks in and you get the beep and it boots up ok....could this be my psu struggling a bit

I have a thermaltake toughpower 700 watt and on reading up on it it should be more than enough for my system as according to what i have read my system is a bout 565 watt with all its components....I have run 2 x 4870's in the past in xfire no problem before....could it be the psu on its way out or am I on the wrong track.

I have tried re-setting bios to defaults and flashed to the lates bios but its still the same. Any ideas what is could be

thx

Your PSU should be fine, 700W is more than enough - and as you say it coped with 2 x 4870's.

Possibly a dodgy card, can you try it in another machine?

Failing that, try an RMA.

700 watt isnt enough to run 2 cards? or am i wrong? i know my card needs that on its own.

Probably not for 2 x 4870X2's but it is certainly enough for 1, which is what the OP has got.

What single card have you got that needs 700W on its own???!!!!

Hi spitzoid

I have a 530W tagan modular on my rig.

Got q9440, 4gb ram, 2 dvd drives, 1 hard disc and a 4870 on it's way. Does my power supply pack enough power to run this system. Currently I'm working fine in this rig with mobo onboard gfx.

Thanks

I'm not an expert but found that this PSU Calculator can be quite helpful in giving a good estimate.

Brilliant, thanks.. accordig to that page my system currently uses 311 watts.

Pheew

But you said that you are going to buy a 4870 - which will draw approx 260W @ load (see above power chart). Which means, if the PSU calculator is correct (remember it is an estimate so could be under or over), you will be needing approx 570W @ full load.

Like I said I'm no expert but personally I would want slightly more than 530W. Especially if you plan to overclock you CPU/GPU/RAM etc.

Do you think it could be the card....dont know if its just a coincidence that it seemed to start after installing it....Once the pc is up and running it runs great...no problems gaming or anything....I cant try it in another m/c

thx

I'm really not sure, it's my best guess though. I would have thought that if your PSU was struggling that you would be experiencing random restarts or complete failure to boot.

Perhaps it could be the PCIe slot on the Mobo that is struggling to communicate at start up - can you try it in another slot?

EDIT: Just to check the obvious, have you got both the 6 & 8 Pin power leads connected?
