Howzit guys.

I've got a friend's computer here, which doesn't detect any USB devices. So, I decided to have a look in the device manager to see if the USB Host devices were installed. When I opened up the device manager, it doesn't show anything.

No devices at all. Just empty..
Also, the user seems to have disabled a lot of things, as the theme is clasic mode and the machine is only using 45mb of ram in idle.

Any ideas, guys?

Thanks a lot. :)
Rob.

Is a repair install the only way?

Reason I ask is because I don't have the Windows XP Professional disk here, with me. :(

Thank you.

I think repair is the last option prior to a clean install, and if you dont have the disk, your in trouble mate :( You could try a third party registry tool, however, i find they cause more problems in the end.

Even if it is; there should still be devices in the device manager. Iwill check it however.

Thanks all. :)

LizardKign: Thanks, all working now. However I am still worried about all the other services being disabled?

I'd be inclined to switch most of them to automatic with the exception of a few like telnet, messenger etc. which should be disabled
Then see which ones get started on boot and any not change to manual.

Though a repair reinstall will probably quicker and easier overall. :)

It would be impossible to advise really as every PC is different unless you can find the list from a fresh install with no drivers and work from that.

There are some guides on the net about which services are safe to not run, they normally provide an overview of all services, so could be good to try that.

I think you've just hit the nail on the head there. I checked, services.msc and a lot of 9if not all) services were disabled! Including the PnP one too.

I'm going to try enable some of them now. Does anyone have a list as such to which ones should be enabled and ones that shouldn't?

Iirc, the list your after is located (somewhere!) in **Baddass' Guide to Windows Performance, Optimization, Security and Tweaking** Thread (Its a sticky at the top of this forum) :)

I checked there and the site is now not working. I just enabled the ones I thought were needed. All working now. :)

Thanks all! :D
