Strange SATA hdd problem

I've encountered an interesting problem with the PC I am building.

I want to use a Seagate 160gig SATA disc, but whenever I connect it to the powersupply the power cuts out completely (no POST, no fans etc).

I have repeated this with the SATA power connectors on the PSU and also using a MOLEX to SATA adapter which came with the MB. When I disconnect the hdd from the powersupply the PC posts with no problems.

I have also connected two of my old ide hdds and an optical drive to the MB and PSU and the PC posts with no problem.

It's obviously a fault with the hdd shorting out the PSU. I was wondering if anyone encountered something similar before ?

The fact that the only common element is the drive itself certainly suggests that it's at fault. Is there any visible damage to the SATA power connector on the drive?

No, everything looks ok externally. It's also straight out of the bag. Oh well, looks like I'll be taking it back tomorrow.

I just never come across a failed hd like that.

Sounds like the drive, the samsungs i've had (4 now) have all failed on me within 3 years and when they failt they do strange things e.g. last one would go fine for ~40mins and then cause the comp to BSOD
