Just relaxing & enjoying my day off in this lovely weather :p , when a unusually low plane fly’s over (I live around 5-10Mile away from Leeds and Bradford airport) the plane only had 1 engine  the engine on the right side was missing, the plane looked like a 737 and was burgundy & white in colour also looked like a kangaroo of some sort on the body of the plane,

Can a plane fly with just 1 engine? Maybe the sun's got to my head  but I’m 100% sure an engine was missing of this plane, sorry no pickys either.

A 737 couldn't take off with one engine unless it was very big and central, so basically either you weren't seeing straight or one of its engines fell off and it was doing an emergency landing at either airport. Unlikely though.

They are designed to be able to keep flying & land with one engine.

ignore :o

edit(ignore my post)

Yes, I heard that 737s [not sure about 747s] can fly on one engine. It probably wasn't intentional though - i.e. maybe fell off beforehand.

Are you sure it was a 737? A kangaroo would indicate an australian airline and 737s can't fly long distance.

Engines don't tend to simply fall off planes. In fact I believe they are specifically engineered not to fall off. But we'll hear in the news soon if one did :)

Ah so its plausible ? I'm going to do a bit of detective work and find out if a plane with one engine landed at L&B airport :p

Maybe it will be on the local news later on tonight.

Not 100% on that,

747s are four engine planes so I doubt they could survive on one engine, and having three fall off is pretty unfortunate.

It is plausibe that it had one engine, but I'd say it was far more likely it was at a funny angle or wasn't what you think it was. :p Engines falling off is something they tend to design against pretty strongly.

Inicidentally a plane taking off from manchester this morning had two herons sucked into one of its engines which blew the engine.

Sure it wasn't one of those with the engine like on the tail? I know nothing about planes so can't look l337 and give a spec :D

I live in Leeds too and see these taking off all the time.

Twin engine planes can fly with only one engine, its a safety feature. for the big 2 engine widebodies I think they can fly upto 3 hours flight from an emergancy runway in case of an engine failure. 3 hours @ 600mph = 1800 miles.

Don't know if a 747 can fly on one engine.

If what the OP saw wasn't an optical illusion, or an accident cos yes engines have fallen off planes before, then its possible what he saw was a test bed for trying different engines.

Probably got nicked at the airport by Dennis Wise so he could sell it to slow the demise of LUFC.

Slow being the key word. ;) :D

747's can fly with one engine but only for enough time to make an emergency landing and only when already in flight.

Also (i think I saw this on an episode or aircrash investigations once) the engines are attached to the wing with bolts that are designed to break under a certain amount of stress so that if an engine comes away, rather than taking the wing with it, it falls away harmlessly and the plane carries on with the remaining engines to make an emergency landing.

My dad has worked on 737's and he confirmed that yes they can fly on one engine for a little while.

"Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. One of our engines has failed, but there is no need to be concerned, as this aircraft is perfectly capable of flying on two engines. However, due to the decreased thrust, our journey is estimated to take an extra hour."
<ten minutes later>
"Ladies and gentlemen, I regret to say that our second engine has failed as well. Although this aircraft is capable of completing the journey safely on one engine, our arrival time will be delayed by approximately 2 hours."
(one passenger to another) "I hope the third engine doesn't fail or we'll be stuck up here forever!"

I'll get my coat...:D
