Strange steam problem

I also have been having steam freeze on me and then i have to shut it down manually.

im sure they will sort out the problems soon.

I've been having other problems with this recent Big Picture update. Now every time Steam is running is causes applications to freeze momentarily every 8-10 seconds. Very annoying when scrolling a web page for example and you can see the CPU activity for Steam spike in Task manager. Every desktop application seems affected. I haven't tried a game yet though.

Then just recently it started messing with the volume for Winamp with it fluctuating, trying to regulate it or something depending on the volume level.

I can only assume it's the big picture mode. Is there anyway to just disable it as this is very irritating? I haven't found an option yet or any launch options. I guess Valve will update it soon enough but I haven't seen anyone else complain of this particular problem.

ive had a bit of freezing for a second or two when playing walking dead tonight, this update hasnt gone as smooth as they wished i suspect!

Sorry to ressurect this old thread , but today i recieved a reply from steam support :
Hello,

We apologize for the long delay.

To resolve issues with the Steam client, please try the following.

Please exit Steam and go to the folder called C:\Program Files\Steam\ (this is the default location for a Steam installation - if you set a different installation directory, you will need to browse to it).

Delete all of the files in this folder except:

The \Steamapps\ folder and Steam.exe (this file is listed as an application and features the black and white Steam logo)

Restart your computer.

Then, launch Steam.exe from within the Steam installation folder, and not from a pre-existing shortcut.

With Steam running, re-test the original issue.

Note: This process will not affect your currently installed games.

If the issue persists, make sure your network is optimized for Steam:

I know its a bit late to help , but i thought id share this regardless .

Thanks
