All over.
I was just driving back home in my Golf Mk IV when all of a sudden my steering locked and my engine went dead and the battery icon lit up. Think the immobiliser may have kicked in? Luckily I was driving on a straight road at about 15mph so I could pull over easily. Restarted the engine and everything was fine.

Just called the garage and sending my car tomorrow to get it checked.

Made me think if I was going fast around a corner, I'd probably be in an ambulance by now.

This happened to anyone else?

no but seen 2 old men on mobility scooters go head on into each other this afternoon, pure carnage i tell you

Happened in my Megane once, coasted to a stop down a side road. It started a short while later, never did figure out why it did it! Could have been any number of things really

Steering lock shouldn't have come on because it's do with with the position of the key?

Steering lock is mechanical though, what position was they key in when it stopped?

Was lightning striking in the same place?

Keep an eye out for tripods...

I doubt it was the immobiliser. My 206 alternator went once and it did something similar. The steering lock didn't come one, I just lost PAS and hence the wheels just locked in a forward direction becasue the steering went really heavy. Also all the wipers went off in slow motion, which was amusing.

This happened in my clio on a roundabout once, though there was no lock, just engine, electrics and PAS all went off. A disaster was averted though, fortunately it wasn't busy. Darn cheap French electronics.

Happened to my Dad years ago in his old Vitesse, when we were driving it back from the auction (typical). Just stopped.

Never did it again.

I very much doubt the steering locked, far more likely it was just the engine stopping which removed assistance and made the steering very heavy. It's still possible to steer, but you really need to put some serious effort into it at lower speeds.

French Diamond of Death ;)

It also had an interesting grounding issue that manifested itself whereby occasionally if you turned on the HVAC blowers, the wipers would come on veeeeeeerrrrrryyyy slowly, and stop half way up the screen, then sit there, along with the blowers coming on veeeerrrrryyy sloooowly. French cars. There's nowt more dependable.
