Stranger Things (Netflix)

Enjoyed the latest batch of episodes setting up the finale, hopefully they land the ending as there's still quite a few side plotlines that need wrapping up.
 
Very poor last batch, felt boring.
Holly still feels forced in when she isn't even needed. Her acting and great.

Dustin and Harrington arguing when the world is ending, really?
Why even introduce a new element which is that forcefield that leads to the melting walls? It just diverting all over the place.

The the teacher clones the gate password but they don't even drive in discreetly, they could smash through the wired fence?

The demis dumbed down and then blown up by an injured woman who came in undetected.

Then will coming out, the speech about common interests was unnecessary looong. I thought it would be some critical reveal but he's just coming out.

Why was vecna scared of that area, because he got shot? I guess they need to create a weakness.

Worse than first batch of S5.
 
Just watched Eps7 and I loosely mean watched. I nodded when Fat Magnum during the whole group cringe monologue said "Jesus christ...".

Finally got a chance to watch these latest 3 episodes.

People who dislike that coming out scene, which was all of 2 minutes, jeez get over it. Seeing grown men even a tiny bit bothered by this is amazing. It was literally set up since episode 2 of season 1 and the reason he told everyone had a good motivation behind it of which there clearly will be pay off in the final episode.

I really don't get the dislike. This is exactly how stranger things has always been, only now the cast has grown, but it's grown mostly with side characters we have known for a long time.

It's also unfair to judge given we have the biggest episode coming that these last 3 have built up to.

Just as episode 1, 2 and 3 were only OK, episode 4 made it worth while.

I am confident for me at least these the final episode will make these ones make more sense.
 
Season 5 is only OK so far. I am sticking with it as I am too invested to bin it off.
Not quite sure in the relevance of the Will thing, it doesn't really add anything to the story set in the 1980s.
I'm disappointed in it in general really. The first two seasons were excellent.

Forget the gay thing, and replace with any other x fear that will had and that vecna was using that against will to scare will away. So will confronted x fear head on and told everyone about it to no longer have it as a fear.

Let's pretend instead of will being gay, pretend in season 1 he had run someone over and killed them and not told anyone.

Then vecna used that secret against him. So will came clean and told everyone.

Would everyone be upset and making a big deal of it? I don't think so. The issue is he likes boys, set up since the start of the first season, something that vecna had used against will, to give motivation etc.

It's so weird people can't enjoy something because gay was mentioned.

Robin is also lesbian, and has had as much if not more screen time talking about that and she's not even a main character

I don't care that Will is gay or that Robin is a lesbian whatsoever, it's the tone of things that I struggle with. I certainly wouldn't as mentioned earlier say it's ruined the show for me as I am still enjoying it, but the way things are presented would fit better if they were still younger kids.

The biggest issue with the scene isn't so much the writing for me, it's the fact they're all clearly grown adults pretending to be kids. If they hadn't dragged their feet between seasons and this was coming out while they were still gawky/confused mid teens I'd have less of a problem as the scene would have felt more fitting. Sure it's arguably overly critical on my end, and as mentioned I'll still watch to the end and I suspect enjoy every moment of it. I just feel the "Will is gay" aspect could have been handled far better in general, it's poorly executed yet has become a major point of the story in terms of them defeating Vecna.

There's still a lot to love so I can look past it, but with Netflix drip-feeding the season it's impossible not to get hung up on certain points while waiting for the conclusion. They should have split this into two parts at most because doing it in three has thrown the pacing off in my opinion, I doubt so many would be focusing on that scene otherwise.

True, but I do appreciate that they have split it.

It's so annoying to see spoilers and I'm grateful Netflix has at least allowed viewers to catch up, but it's come at the cost of perceived pacing.

I say perceived as I know before I've watched shows and thought the gap between series has changed the pacing, but then when you rewatch years later without the gap, you dont even realise it and the pacing is actually OK.

Absolutely in regard to pacing, but when episodes are recorded it's with the mindset from the actual people on set/writers that they'll be viewed back to back in a show like this. It's not some old school semi-episodic thing such as Star Trek where every episode was largely self enclosed, it's a continued narrative from episode to episode. The problem stems I feel from those in charge higher up the chain that decide on release schedules and splitting things as they have is clearly an attempt at milking imo. It honestly would have been better if they went with a weekly release schedule than the way they've went about things.

They turned a 2-3 minute scene that should have overall been a small part of the season, into a sort of proto mid-season finale and it's really not done them any favours. They've made a much bigger deal out of something that might not necessarily have been one given later context/story.

Part of me feels bad for the showrunners and cast, it's still a brilliant show but I very much get the impression that management issues outside of their control have quite simply made things awkward/weird.

Agree with most of what's been said. This last season isn't quite hitting the target for me but think thats mainly the cast being older and as it turns out not great actors.

Glad it will be concluded next episode.
 
OMG, I can't believe that reveal about Will!

Everyone already knows. No one gives a ****. Maybe in the 80s, but yea, not now and not that group of friends. It was boring, said nothing we didn't already know and if anything belittles coming out by making it such a hilarious non-event.

This last episode better be good, with a lot of death and no loose ends.
 
It does feel like two groups of episodes would have worked better, this episode didn't feel like as much of a break as episode 4 did. It's funny people saying nobody cares that Will is gay when people are showing that actually they really do care.

i don't think it's meant to be. it's what 3 days until the next episode.

if you rewatch any series of stranger things, there's a "set up" episode before the final where they all get their stuff together, booby trap the house etc, before then the big event happens. this is common on lots of series. game of thrones was a little backwards in that it was i think episode 7 that would typically be the big massive event episode, and then episode 8 would be the quiet uneventful one.

patience guys, the final is very nearly here.
