Stranger Things (Netflix)

Watched a recap for 1-4 as it's been stupidly long, then watched season 5 episode 1-7 in a row ready for tomorrow as had nothing to do today.

Lets just say I had to force myself to sit through it, pacing is all over the place and acting/design is questionable feels like a YouTube fan project. What happened? The earlier seasons where really good from what I remember.

I didn't think the age issue was going to be a problem to me but it's really weird, they are supposed to be 16-17 year olds? Yeah sure some of them like Sadie still look young but others look very much older. It's not something they could help I suppose but it's very weird looking. Doesn't help with Millie doing blue steel with lip filler and botox. Not a fan of the hate she's getting about her looks, but it's such a shame what women are doing to themselves these days.

The coming out scene. Oh boy, they couldn't resist could they. We knew from the very start, so did his friends as it was commented on more than one occasion. Robins was tasteful and was used as a story point between her and Steve, actually made sense and wasn't overblown short and sweet. Wills however it was 2-3 min which doesn't sound long but just the way they did it, putting a stop in the action while the world is ending to have a little get together with everyone who already knows, have a poorly scripted speach and a cry.....I get it's set in the 80s sure, much more stigma than today and hatred and apparently was going to be used as a weakness or something against Will, but still very cringe and out of place the way they did it, ruined the pacing.

Holly being the main focus for some reason is very odd.
Eleven is sidelined in her own story for a character no one cares about. She's super powerful she can take down helicopters, flip trucks and close the bloody portal, now she can barely do anything.

So so soooo many story threads left to rot, they have so much to tie up on the LAST episode, it's apparently 2 hours from what I've read but I don't think that's going to be enough time.

Overall a massive disappointment with the overall story points.

The best part so far was a Rambo Nancy with how silly it looked.

I have heard way too many bad reviews of this season to be bothered watching it.

The only truly good season was the first one. Season 4 was kind of ok I guess.

Of course it's all about the message now. How stunning, how brave, yawn.

With all that said, it’s worth watching if you enjoyed seasons 1-4 IMO.

Sure, its got plot holes galore, the acting has inevitably declined a bit and there is no denying the messaging is very much laughable, but at the end of the day it was entertaining enough to recommend completing the series..

I think I'm in the same place. S1 was great, others haven't really been so. With all that is said about S5, I don't think I'll bother.

Argh!! The speech was needed!!!

I'm not saying i agree with the 'message' or the fact everything these days has to have the woke connotations, but Will coming out and coming to terms to his 'dark secret' was important. Otherwise Vecna would use this to beat Wills powers. Will has now removed this vulnerability and i believe he will become a big part in defeating Vecna now.

They could have used anything else i agree, but that is what we got. So they didn't really stop the action - it was vital he rid himself of his shame to progress the battle.

Could have been at the start of the season though before the first battle etc instead of the second from last episode during a time they are fighting for their lives.

It couldn't though because of everything else that led up to that scene had to happen to for will to realise he has to reveal his secret and worry to stop vecna using it against him.

Max had a similar scene in season 4, in an episode right before the action. The difference being hers had nothing to do with being gay and people can't look past that with will.

So strange people saying about "the message" when it's not even about that

My issue is each episode is to long and bloated, its also quite boring overall and I enjoyed all the previous seasons, season 1 obviously being the best. I cancelled my Netflix for now and will catch up with final episodes when I resub, not in any rush unless everyone says the final episode is the best ending to a show ever.

Did it really need every character of the show there though? I thought that was quite laughable. This is a personal thing no, some of the characters there hardly know Will that well.

Fair point. But i suppose he hit everybody in one go, therefore Will is not worrying about telling everyone one at a time and can unleash his full capacity in the finale.

I dunno - i didn't write it and maybe i'm making excuses - but Stranger Things is one of the best TV shows and i want it to finish on a high!

Yeah for sure, but some things can be left to the viewers imagination, the scene could have just had his mother, brother and very close friend, and telling the rest would just have been a formality, not everything the viewer has to see. It just looked very odd.
I sure hope the final episode ends on a high though, as the series overall has been great, just the last season a tad disappointing personally.

Which is weird, because you would think as they age and gain more acting experience, the acting would improve rather than decline.

Is it though? Not many child actors end up with glittering careers. Home Alone, Goonies, Harry Potter. Stranger things is the same and it really doesn't bother me. I am not expecting The Godfather.

Oh I agree, not many child actors do have glittering careers, but as with most things in life practice/experience usually makes you better at something (even if still not great at it) rather than more practice/experience making you actually worse at something. Hence why you would expect an improvement in the acting over 5 seasons rather than a decline in the acting.

It’s way too drawn out. The whole melting building part and the Nancy / nothing burger Jonathan bit in particular. It should have been 4-5 episodes tops, but as has been noted, they’ve probably been told to draw it out by some executive somewhere.

Also, the amount of CGI and green screen, considering the budgets they’ve had to play with, is just too much. I’m clearly getting old - like the cast.
