Had a call thia afternoon from my cardiologist. I recently had a 24 hour ECG and echo as I was suffering with palpitations. The results were bad. Basically my heart failure is so bad now that even though I'm on numerous meds, everytime I make an effort to do something, it goes into tachycardia and skipped beats. And my ejection fraction is only 15%. A normal persons is sround 55-60%. She said its an accepted sign of a heart nearing the end of it's natural life. At a conference, the cardiologists looked at my case and agreed there was nothing more that could be done for me via procedures or medication.

She has upped my meds in one last effort and said that I am to go back and have another 24 hour ECG, in 4 weeks and if the results were the same (she didn't sound hopeful) that, with the agreement of myself and the Freeman hospital in Newcastle, I would be placed as priority on the heart transplant waiting list as my life expectancy is now short.

In a bit of a daze atm. I suffer from health anxiety anyway (who could blame me), and my mind has convinced itself that I am not going to make it through the whole thing. Sorry to be so downbeat but you have to let these things out otherwise they eat away at you.

Keep going Rob! My wife suffers from heart failure, has a pacemaker and quite a few other problems, so I know how hard it can be.
Best of luck to you.

Hope for the best sir... Difficult to be under better care than at the Freeman, if that's where you end up. They did some sterling world class work on my brother-in-law about 7-8 years ago on said same organ, and he's doing most excellent now (although he's still a bit grumpy with his missus), having had issues since childhood.

I wish you luck! I'm sure it''ll turn out fine.

I had an ECG last week for a small irregularity in my heart beat (relatively common, apparently). I didn't really know it could get this serious.

Have you always had palpitations, or was this something that escalated over time?

I was born with a congenital heart defect. I have no tricuspid valve and only one ventricle. Your case is nothing like mine mate, so I really wouldn't worry about it.

Started getting the palpitations in my teens. My heart was enlarging due to the condition and an operation I had when I was six. It starts to build up scar tissue that causes rhythm disturbances.

This way my heart is wired is going to make a transplant even more tricky. That's why I'm going to the freeman. They are the only ones that do them on congenital heart defect patients.

Hell of a slap up from south east London.

The Freeman is very good, infact I think it's the UK's leading heart specialist hospital. You couldn't be in better hands.

Thank you, that's really interesting - sounds like some pretty intense surgery

Thanks for sharing and I wish you all the best.

hey bud,

My Dad is in the same stage as you from what i know, he had a major heart attack in 2012, his left valve is badly damaged with scar tissue and is operating at 19%...

I dont know the full details, but fingers crossed for you mate.

I too suffer with heart issues and the mental pain of worry is terrible. One i cannot explain

best of luck to you, do you mind me asking how old you are?

Best of luck to your Dad too. A lot of patients at the hospital where I go suffer from mental issues due to the stress of their condition. Most of them under 40 as well. Quite tragic.
