My dad rang me this morning saying he had given his PC a quick dust and when he tried to turn it back on it wouldn't get any further than verifying DMI pool data,

I'm at his house now and the PC can boot into bios and I have tried changing the boot device to each hard drive and even tried booting to his windows installation disk to repair the MBR but it always freezes at the same point, even when just trying to boot from DVD

I've tried reseating all the components incase he had knocked anything loose when dusting but nothing works.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Try booting with one stick of RAM at a time if you have already reseated the Dimms. Perhaps try a CMOS reset if that doesn't work

One of the first things I tried was booting with 1 stick of ram and i have tried multiple slots, I have also reset the CMOS and hasn't made a difference

Have you tried booting it with the optical drive disconnected?

I had a similar issue with a faulty DVD drive once, it was constantly busy (light was always on) even though there was no disc even in it.

It froze at the verifying DMI part of bootup and even though it wasn't selected as the boot device, disconnecting it once I realised it was constantly busy solved the issue for me.

This normally occurs when a device can't be recognised by the system or a device isn't registering correcting, more commonly HDDs/Optic units (OU) such as CD and DVD drives

Check all your bus and power connections are secure and tight. Replace any cables if you can.

Check the HDDs/OU can be seen in the BIOS and any other boot devices. Reset the CMOS if necessary and retest.

Test the system with only the principle HDD.

If you still get the problem, remove all hard disks and reboot. It should get as far as recognising there is no OS. If this is the case, there maybe a problem with the drive. Download and run the HHD diagnostics tool from the manufacturers website, which is normally run from a live CD.
