I have roughly £2000 to pay for a used car, insurance that has 6mths MOT/Tax.

I've passed my test and just done my Pass Plus in a Fiat Punto, which ain't bad, but there doesn't seem like many people at OCUK consider it.

Anyway, just off the bat, name me some cheap, but cheerful cars that are in your view better than the Fiat Punto and why? If not, just name some cars in the same bracket.

Avoid the Punto, it is the slow 1.1 and looks like the local barry has owned it, so it would have been thrashed in every gear since the day he/she bought it.

No up on fiesta prices, but i would say £800 for an 11 year old fiesta is too much.

I think that would be a better fiesta on a quick search.

my girlfriend has a 1.25 Fiesta - ideal first car IMO.

It goes quite well, its reliable, and handles OK.

ditto. i always say it. 1.25 is the one to go for. Pick up a hell of a nice example for 2k aswell... hold their value pretty well aswell.

He needs to pay for insurance in the 2k though.
I'm 23 in December and have done my Pass Plus, so with Quinn i'm getting a figure of just under £500 for Fire & Theft. For my first year on the road, that's pretty damn impressive. Punto, Saxo, Corsa, 206, they are all getting me below £500 insurance. (glad I waited till after 21 getting lifts from ppl instead :D)

One question though, if I want a car that's quite a far bit away and a mate drives me to the place to pick it up, I can't drive it back? If say the car has no road tax either, just an MOT till a certain date, i'd also have to buy road tax and get insurance setup for it aswell before I try and drive it back home?

I'm thinking Fiesta 1.25 now, but i've still got one firm eye set on a Toyota Aygo or Citroen Saxo.

You wont get an Aygo in your budget, I would choose a fiesta over a Saxo, but thats me.

Try and get them to tax the car, before you purchase it.
You can get insurance for a day to drive the car home. Or you ring a company get a quote, which is valid for about a month. Then when you go and look at the car, decide if you want it or not, if you want the car, then ring up insurance and get the cover started there and then. then drive home.

yup, aygo is way out of your budget. Saxo no-go, only the VTR/VTS seem good enough cars but sadly the image portrayed of them has spoilt them. Just dont. Fiesta 1.25 and your on to a winner.

Alritey, Fiesta 1.25 it is. :)

Will post pics once I have attained such a beast. ;)

Got my heart now set on this for £3250. :)

But they're pretty reliable, do you really need such a low mileage? You could get one for half that price on about 60k I reckon.

True.

The one you have pointed out is a mk5, very similar to the mk4, just slightly different front end with different bumpers and all came with PAS and the likes. You could pick up a mk4 with 50k on the clock with PAS etc for about 1500.

Worth considering.

Over £3k on a fiesta! Damn I thought you wanted a cheap runaround, for £3k you can get far nicer cars than a fiesta. You could get a focus for that.

You not tempted by a larger car like a mondeo or vectra (or loads of others)? You'll get far more toys for your money, and at your age insurance should be easy.
