Students = Cheap windows 7

Can you use the student key to activate an installation from the "Full" media?

I purchased 7 Pro for myself during the pre-orders.
I purchased Student 7 for my wife (she is doing an OU course).

Can I use the Windows 7 Media from my box, install it on her machine and then activate it with the student key?

I highly doubt it would work as this is an upgrade version. Only one way to find out though. Do tell us your results.

Can someone PLEASE TRY THIS - it will then give us the definitive answer. If you don't have access to the physical media, download ultimate edition via torrent (this is legal IMHO), remove the ei.cfg file to allow it to install any edition, and enter one of these students keys.

PLEASE!

Apparantly, you can upgrade form Win7 RC to full using the upgrade:

Microsoft recently confirmed that it is also possible to upgrade a pre-RTM version of Windows 7 with a Windows 7 Upgrade edition. This means that users who are already running Windows 7 RC (or another build) can buy a Windows 7 Upgrade edition and get a full installation of Windows 7 this way.

From here.

Will I have any problems installing the 64bit upgrade over a 32bit XP install (I know it does a clean install but I'm not sure if it allows 32>64 installs?

I've just downloaded the home premium 64 bit version. I have xp 32 bit.

No it does not work straight from the download and the setup.exe file just says it's not a valid win 32 file.

Getting help from microsoft is like banging your head against a solid steel door. I believe there is a way to make this work but the department that deals with it is constantly busy. Microsoft will charge you a nice 46 quid if you want instant help. I believe there is a way to get a dvd delivered but guy on the phone who barely spoke english said it would take 2 weeks for delivery.

To hell with this im sticking with xp til I can be bothered to even look for advice on what to do.

il try later but wont be home until 1ish

Does the "full" media include upgrade versions?

Upgrade discs for Vista were full media discs but the serial key was just for upgrades and would not work for any other type of install.

A workaround for this was that you could upgrade an unactivated version of Vista. So what people did was, use the upgrade disc media (full) to install an unactivated version of Vista and then upgrade that using the disc and then activate. This would work fine since you were activating an upgrade.

This is exactly what I did for current install, as this is the closest to a clean install you could get on Vista.

Install Trial Vista Home Premium -> upgrade this to Vista Home Premium -> then use serial key to activate.

However for Windows 7, clean installs can actually be done from upgrade media. So I doubt the retail/upgrade discs will be identical like they were for Vista. So the question is whether, you can upgrade using retail discs.

I can now confirm this does NOT work.

Retail Windows 7 Professional - installed.
Key for Student 7 Professional entered - Wrong Product key notification.

Try upgrading your current installation of 7 Pro. When you are installing with actual media, there should be an option saying update/upgrade.

Then try key.

Bugger. OK, now we have to find a workaround. What someone needs to do now is install W7 Pro/HP (whichever student edition you bought), don't activate, then run this downloaded .exe file and see what happens.

Bingo, that is what people have been wondering for the past few months. Except with actual upgrade media (or retail media if it includes upgrade option) rather than th executable

Has anyone else found that the x64 setup file will not work on a 32 bit operating system?

I assume that there will be a fair few trying to upgrade from a 32bit OS to 64 only to find the setup file will not run!

A table released by microsoft said this would require a custom install. Since this isn't viable using the executable, its to be expected.

They could have made it a lot clearer though.

Just wait till people upload the upgrade discs online. Better than paying £9.

Bugger this was my plan :(

Not sure whether to just go with 32bit or give up on this now.

Edit: Wait so the upgrade discs might allow this to work?

I'll wait for confirmation on that (not in a particular hurry here and the offer is good until Jan I think?) but if that's true I might just pay the extra 9 quid, still not a bad price overall.
