Students = Cheap windows 7

DO you think your key is restricted to a particular version (ie. 32 or 64 bit)?

I foolishly downloaded the 32bit student offer one, and should have got the 64 bit.
A friend has the 64bit student download file - will my key work with his download you think?

If i am buying a new SSD, what should i do, install my old os (have a spare license) and then use the upgrade or what? I have also bought the CD that comes with the offer, am i able to install this on a brand new SSD or do i have to install it on my Current HDD

Heh.

Yes, it appears to be possible to create a bootable DVD allowing a fresh install on a new HDD/SSD. Read the last couple of pages for instructions. There seems to be a couple of methods for doing it, so pick the one best for you.

The key should work for either version.

Well honestly, my query was legitimate. There were simple instructions released with the upgrade and everybody seems to be trying to find a way around entering a key. I wasn't accusing anything, merely asking a question.

In any case, i'm going to do the install-over-top. I'll report back with my findings to see if it's any more bloated than a fresh install. If it is, then i'll just use the above methods to do a "fresh install".

Edit: has anyone finished their install? What's the HDD damage in GB?

Hard drive damage here is 11Gb.

Make the .iso file from the downloaded x64 source. Insert said DVD into drive and reboot. Choose custom install and just install as normal. Hard drive was manually formatted from inside the setup as I had XP on there as a temporary measure until today. No key entered during install as I didn't have it to hand. Windows 7 Professional is installed as that is what I payed for, took a little under 20 minutes to get to a working desktop. Not a single issue of any type. Just can't see why people are having or think thay are going to have trouble with this. How simple do you need it to be?

Haha, just made an iso image using ImgBurn. It plays the best wee jingle at the end.

Not installing yet, just preparing. Can anyone else confirm the ImgBurn method. Not that I don't trust the OP for it, just like to see how others are getting on with it

That jingle frightens the hell out of me every time.

I can't do the over-the-top, since I'm currently using Vista Ultimate. I guess this means I can't use my existing Vista Ultimate key for Win 7 Home Premium.

God damnit.

I used the imgburn method, and it worked absolutely perfectly. Just installing updates to Microsoft Office at the moment :)

I've created the bootable iso using the instructions posted earlier and it seems to be working.

Someone said earlier that you need to install it first without activating but then run the setup again and use your upgrade key.

But then someone else says you can use your upgrade key first time round, provided there is a previous windows installation on one of your drives.

Can anyone clarify this?

Just checked my windows xp key as i lost my cd years ago and forgot if it was oem or not and it seems it is and so i shouldnt be able to change motherboards however i have definately changed mobos twice whilst on this xp key (think i had to phone up but no hassle)

So I'm now wandering if I should install now or wait until I get a new system.

Just bagged a copy of the professional version.

I have a quick question though. I have just noticed since buying and downloading that it says it's an upgrade version. What does this mean?

I am away from home at the moment and don't have any Vista/Xp disk with me. Is a XP/Vista disk needed for this upgrade version to work and install? Can i just burn this EXE to a disk and install like any other copy of windows?

I do have a copy of Vista Home Premium OEM at home, can i upgrade on tat if i got a hold of it? Seems so silly that there isn't just one version. :/

For those using the imgburn or similar method.

Did you have a totally clean out the box brand spanking mint condition hard drive to install onto? Or did you format one that previously had XP/Vista on it?

Someone said earlier that you need to install it first without activating but then run the setup again and use your upgrade key.

I believe that is just if you need a workaround when trying to use your ugrade key with a full version of win 7.
As opposed to just upgrading by double clicking the .exe file you download

Dont wanna sound rude dude, but the last 4 pages have been about how to install it.

Is this offer going to stop at any time, ordo I have a month or so?

Money is annoyingly tight at the moment :( Paying bills still at my last place.. and getting nice shiny new ones for my new place. Sigh.

Yeah, my bad! :D Kinda jumped the gun then, didn't realise some people were having the same problem as me or similar.

Just been reading the previous pages now and it's clearing it all up for me.

Looks like i can "get" a copy of windows 7 retail and just install the exe. i got from digital river and ten activate. Job done! Or so it seems. :)

EDIT - So, will the £9 disk kit be a full retail copy or will the disk be an upgrade also? Seems like a right farce if that disc is an upgrade also, what if everything went **** up and all i had was that disk?

I created an image of my download of win 7 pro using imgburn, I have just formatted and reinstalled using the disc. Booting from the disc i get all the options to custom install and modify partitions. Once installed it activated with my emailed key with no problems. This was without any other operating system on the computer..

Just come back and read the last few pages. Obviously then the .iso people have been creating from the downloaded .exe is different to a retail dvd. Probably the best possible outcome really. Sweet.
