Students = Cheap windows 7

Well it seems I have downloaded twice - and had two corrupt downloads at two different locations.

Lucky me

Edit: It seems that Setup1.box is the problem for me (the biggest file at 2.7GB). 2 downloads, 2 different checksums, both wrong :(

Quick question. I ordered the CD version of this...
Now assuming I get lucky and receive it tomorrow considering the RM strikes...
Would this be bootable? If so, when does Windows "verify" your upgrade by checking previous version of Windows (Vista or XP) ?

Yes

and

apparently it doesn't.

Yet to verify this myself however.

So i could use my download and burn to a dvd now and install that now and when i get my new mobo use my £9 dvd or the one i make and install it on my new system after reformatting my HDD you think?

OK i've just spent a while trying various methods and i'd like to share my results.

Key used = Windows 7 Pro Student Upgrade 64 bit
Disc = Bootable DVD made from the downloaded files and command line method posted in this thread earlier.

First test I did was a completely clean install booting from disc, blank HD, no previous versions of windows anywhere. Result - Key invalid, would NOT accept it. However, was able to skip entering the key, and then run the upgrade from the disc from within windows, and then it DID accept the key. Took bloody ages though.

Second test I did was a typical reformat, booting from disc and wiping the previous install of windows 7 (installed and activated from the first test). Result - Key was accepted! No need to mess around with double installs or old versions of windows when you want to reformat it would seem.

Hope thats of use to someone :)

Cheers

Quick question, friend purchased this offer and couldn't install it(running W7 RC 32-bit), am I right thinking that this offer if for upgrading from Vista/XP? :D

You cant do an over the top upgrade from the RC, you need to do a clean install. Also, if you purchased the 64bit version of the student offer you're going to have a slight problem trying to run the installer from a 32bit version of windows.

Cheers for the making an ISO instructions. Installed it from scratch, overwriting the RC version of W7 x64 and it has been validated.

£30 for W7, not bad.

Just incase this helps:

1. Download Win 7
1.jpg

2. Double click the file and open it. It does not matter what version of Windows you are on. You will then see:

3. Download and install
imgburn.

4. Open it and click create iso from files:
3.jpg

5. Select the folder named 'expandedSetup' and select a destination. I made a folder on my desktop called Win7:
4.jpg

6. Click on the Advanced Tab. Then click 'Make Image Bootable'. Then select 'etfsboot.com' for the Bootimage. etfsboot.com is located in the expandedSetupfolder then go into boot.

7. When this box appears;
6.jpg
Click Yes.

8. Another box will appear, click Ok.
Allow the image file to be created. Burn this to disk using imgburn. Install Win 7.

Hope this helps!

*Is stupid* What do you mean by 'build to burn'?

Use the 'Write files/folders to disc' instead of 'Create image file from files/folders'.

As indicated by the descriptions, the compilation you just created would be burnt directly to disc, instead of first creating an iso then manually burning that.

Failing all of that, just follow the instructions by xrs, they are perfectly valid ;)

Hi there, I checked mine as promised and got the same for all three:

7B29E21B7F6BC0850E65085205B5EAFE *setup1.box
87DCC913A7BBBFCFA2C2526C2E894F97 *setup2.box

This is a ******* joke. 3 downloads three corrupt versions of setup1.box.

Left it going overnight, while the computer was idle. Got up this morning to the same problem.

I wish I'd just gone for the full retail
