students

because normally students on a night out are drunk and have no idea what the hell they are listening too.
drunk people listening to cheesy crap means happy drunks. better to have happy drunk students than idiot drunks who are in the wrong frame of mind and start fights.

Truth.

Cheese is fun and it's something almost everyone will recognise. I enjoy most cheese even though I don't actually like the music. It's the best thing when you are with a group of people with different music tastes.

Cheese is awesome when you are drunk. End of.

Just out of interest, which uni do you go to? If you go to somewhere in a small town/city like Loughborough then surely you can't expect a huge variation in nightlife? I'm at Manchester and I don't have that problem at all

Leeds.

Psyk -thats a good point about people with different music tastes

There's some places in Leeds which don't play cheese, tho you'll be hard pushed to find an entire set anywhere without something cheesey in it.
Most places have a "themed" night where its a certain type of music, some places just play cheese all the time. Depends on what you like really and you'll be hard pushed to find a non cheesy night on a Friday (though there are some around, not sure about RnB but theres a fair few non cheese/rock/metal nights about)

In Plymouth there are various clubs, most playing a selection of music cheese/rock/R&B/dance etc. I really cant stand clubs that play just one type of music all night. I love rock and Dance/trancy stuff but couldnt listen to it all night. Even rooms such as C103 get boring playing the same music over and over.

there used to be a great night on at rehab on thursdays that put hip hop on all night. that was really good.

Heaven n hell used to be good on wednesday (£7 all u can drink) with a selection of downstairs harder trance/dance, middle hip hop and upstairs cheese/cheesy dance

Just seems to be getting taken over by places like oceana and its random rubbish in every room

im dance and trance, and we get shunted for the current "indie trend"

so im not overly happy

girls aloud on this friday soon

i may get to finally see my cheryl tweedy  :D :D :D

I call what you listen to cheesy :P

I guess it is a similar reason to why the Radio plays crap music, not sure why that is though.

I tend not to go out to clubs to listen to the music, although it is a definite bonus when it is good. Actually I was pleasantly surprised when I went out to a club in Fulham (some strange basement opposite C&W hospital if anyone's interested) and the music was pretty decent. I go to gigs and listen to stuff on my stereo when I want to listen to my personal tastes. Cheesy music can be fun on a night out, but I'm loathed to spend a fortune on getting into an expensive place for a cheese night. Somewhere like Fabric it's acceptable to pay quite a bit, but not the Hammersmith Palais!

I despise cheese and cheese nights and as a student it might seem like that is all there is to offer but once you get to know your city a bit better there are loads of quality nights out to be had!

For those that like trance and similar check out http://www.dontstayin.com i can almost guarantee you'll find a decent night in your city in the next couple of weeks probably at a venue you've never even heard of. All it takes is a little bit of effort and you'll never have to listen to build me up buttercup again

I normally prefer RnB or Hip Hop at clubs since I generally go there for the girls, not to dance around in a circle with mates. I don't mind the latter, but it's no good doing that every time you go out. It's much easier bumping up to someone when Ne-Yo is singing about having sex in a toilet than it is when Queen is singing about becomming an internationally fast-loving gay man.

With respect m8, most trance is pretty cheesy. Leeds is overflowing with awesome proper underground dance nights playing high quality deep house, breaks, minimal, tech-house, electro etc etc, such as:

Back To Basics
Technique
Asylum
Dirty Disco
Abbatoir

If you want a great night out next Saturday - catch Technique/Asylum's opening night at their new venue, The Warehouse

Why do places think all students love terrible cheesy music? And why dont venues pay a bit of money to get some good djs/rock bands or whatever?

You just need to know what place is playing what, gatecrasher has had a lot of great dj's playing, including PVD, just know where you going before you set off. Also find people with the same taste in music, there must be houseparties kicking around with dance, drum and bass, etc.

Also: dontstayin is your friend!
