When BSE hit the UK beef industry in the 90's beef exports were banned from Britain, in 99 the beef export ban was lifted. France didn't agree with the EC findings and still banned imports. The European Commission began legal proceedings against the French Government for their failure to lift their import ban on UK beef on 16 November 1999. It submitted an application to the European Court of Justice on 4 January. The UK intervened in support of the Commission in written proceedings and at the Oral Hearing in Luxembourg on 19 June.

Then Foot and Mouth Hit and the French continued the Import ban, even though this problem was contained and the UK Beef and Beef products is meant to be safe.

Would it be just for us to use the same standards as the French to Ban french poultry imports? We could say they pose a threat to the stability of the English Industry, exactly the same agrument they used in 2001.

I say we should do it. France has been walking over England on that aspect for a good few years now. And don't even get me started on the Eu rebate issue :(

I think that's what he's getting at :p Spite them for spiting us.

Personally, I don't care where my chicken's come from, s'long as it's got 6 wings and 6 breasts like the ones in my KFC bucket.

To be fair, thats more Blairs fault. That man would sacrifice his newborn if it would please some foreign diplomat

I know...Blair asked Chirac about the rebate, and instead of doing something he gives France another £2bn to think about it doing so in (I think) 2008!

As you can't get BSE from poultry, I don't see how we could use the same argument. Why would we want to ban French poultry at all?

The key bit you might have wanted to quote was

"....they pose a threat to the stability of the English Industry"

and this was the justification they used to extend the ban with light to the foot and mouth.

In retribution for the sheep-burning, port-blocking, beef-banning (illegally) antics our French neighbours have adopted against us.

I think he means because of the confirmed bird flu thats been found there, not BSE etc.

Perhaps because if they don't like it when the shoe is on the other foot they will then stop acting like muppets with regards to our farm produce.
Teaching someone a lesson can be far from "immature".

On an aside the last time I heard "immature" was in a playground in the 80s.
