Well I love travelling, and from the numerous places I have been to, this is what I have learnt (there probbably is more, but I can't think of anything)

  1. no one is your friend. Well thats easy, never trust anyone, ever when travelling about. They may try to save you money, or give you a free guided tour or something, but ignore them. They are scammers, even if they are genuine, its not worth the risk.
  2. Never buy/use/eat or anything from the hotel. They will generally be 3-4 times more than the local convinience store/supermarket. Laundry can also be done a lot cheaper outside the hotel.
  3. Never go anywhere the taxi driver suggests and he wants to take you straight away. eg if he tells you - you should visit xyz sometime, its real good. Thats ok. If he says, you should visit zyx its real good, I can take you there for free, don't worry. Then its a scam.
  4. Apartments are nearly always better value for money than hotels, for example in Bangkok you can stay in some hotel for £50 a night where you will get 1 small room and a bathroom or you can stay in a 2 bedroom apartment where you will get 2 large bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, kitchen, lounge etc. The only thing is that it may be a little further away from the attractions, but this is not always the case.
  5. Never eat/drink in tourist areas. They will shaft you big time and the food isn't always the best.
Well, what have you learnt?

It is worthwhile to make an attempt to speak the lingo. Even if it is a poor attempt and they reply in English.

The people of Llanberis in Wales are the most Chavvy ******* Welsh ******** ive ever had the misfortune to meet

I hope they all die from falling slate

Put bags across your shoulder and neck, across the body, not just on 1 shoulder. Especially in Barcelona.

Another one, never compare prices in local currency, never think "that will cost a tenner in the UK so a fiver is reasonable"

Try to guess what locals will pay then judge the price on that.

Also never buy guided tours from your tour op if you go on a package holiday as they will rip you off bigtime.

Quoted for the truth

If someone invited you in a bar for a free drink, its a brothel

If theres erotic drawing on hung on the walls, its a brothel

If the girl asks you to buy a £30 cocktail... well you get the idea.

Are you talking about a holiday(couple of weeks) or actually staying somewhere different for a month or more? My approach would differ depending on how long I was staying somewhere.

If it is longterm I'd suggest finding out where the locals go for food, drinks etc and try to learn the language. Try to mix with them and you will be likely to have more fun.

If it is for a holiday then just suit yourself, I try to do as much as I can in terms of activities, sports and the like but I don't care too much about what I am spending within reason and I won't necessarily go out of my way to avoid tourist areas although my natural inclination might make me do that anyway.

*** again.. I was in Mexico a few years back during the Euro championships. When we had the meeting in the morning first day we was there.

The rep told us they will be putting on a coach to take us to Cancun to watch the Englandv Switzerland game as this was the only place to see the match live. We was 30mins drive south from Cancun and it would have cost us £30 drinks included too ...Me and the missus thought...nahh not bothered..
Come match day .. wondered to the bar in the complex and there was the match about to kcick off.. free drinks anyhow cos we went all inclusive..

So dont go on any Excursions ......you can get them cheaper if not free

comes with a complitemtary cherry i guess ;) :D

If you go to Spain/Canary Islands don't have a go on the free cards they shove in your face on the street. One of your family will always win and they'll try to get you in a taxi to see some time shares.

Don't enter karaoke competitions on the Canaries because the winner has already been chosen and she will tour round the bars on a friday evening at a certain time singing Patsy Clines Crazy.

Once again in the Canaries.
DO NOT buy anything from one of the Asian electronic shops - YOU WILL be ripped off.

Don't try to speak the lingo because they'll think you are an idiot.

That cherry would be long gone.

Bring a camera and take pictures of everything. You always get back and think, "I wish I'd taken a pic of that."
