Stupid MAC users

around about 90% of computer users have no idea what to do other than ctrl alt delete.

why do you think forums like this only have about 30k users when almost every home in the country now has a pc.

most people are tools! covers all three

Hello bledd, who are you referring to "most people"? You meet some really horrible people in this world and equally, you meet some really nice people.

around about 90% of computer users have no idea what to do other than ctrl alt delete.

Hello lewism, what conclusion have you come to based on what you have just said above? :)

Graphic designer here; just completed a three year BA in Graphic and Communication design, and am a proud PC user. 95% of the class went out and bought MacBooks, I went out and got a PC. End result = I win.

At work there are three of us; one guy uses a PC running SUSE Linux, the other guy uses a PowerMac G5 and I use a Windows laptop. Our file server runs SUSE too. All the computers play very nicely 98% of the time, which shows that what's more important is what platform suits you best, not that one is universally better than another.

Personally I find Macs overly restrictive and irritating to use, but I can't deny their appeal and how well designed they can be.

I dont get how "creative" people reckon that Mac runs photoshop and stuff like that better?

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that traditionally Macs were used in DTP, illustration etc and so people get used to them. I don't think that Macs are actually any faster, it will depend more on what you are used to than anything else.

the only thing i find annoying about Mac users, are the ones that seem to think PC tech support should be able to support them when there department is unwilling to pay for our training (there are like 30 mac users and 4k PC users we support)

Turning that on it's head though, they have Mac's supplied for work purposes so is it terribly unreasonable to expect their IT department to support their IT?

If you don't have the skills to support them then stop blaming the users and acknowledge the issue, either train some people or make the business decision that you can't support them and use something else or get a third party support agreement. Supplying them and then moaning about the users when you lack the skills to support them is disingenuous surely?

I think a lot of the strange hate comes down to people taking Apple's advertising to heart because they have little experience with the actual kit.

Yes, the adverts, the company's general ethos and many if its 'fans' are smarmy and quite pretentious. But it doesn't follow that OS X is a bad operating system. It's not - it's great.

I wonder how many actually take it as gospel on the Apple FAQ's saying that there is no need to run an AV program on a Mac.

Personally I won't run any machine without an AV unless it isn't used to access the Internet.

Personally I like mac's and plan on building a home media solution with mini/Elgato/iTunes/AppleTV with an iPod Touch for when I want to take the media with me. I have looked at Linux and Windows Solutions and decided for me that the Apple solution suits me best. I also have Windows and Linux boxes at home using the appropriate platform for what I want that box to do.

To me the actual OS/Platform shouldn't matter, what matters is the applications and MY ability to get the apps to do what I want with minimal fuss.

There are a great many stupid users out there when it comes to IT. There are people who refuse to use Windows, as they don't want to contribute to the evil empire that is Microsoft. There are people out there that refuse to use Apples with the lack of flexibility on the hardware front. There are also the Linux diehards that will always find a way to offer a Linux solution even where it isn't appropriate for the people in question.

I don't think any of the platforms have followers that are more or less stupid then the other platforms.

I would have to say however that if work provides me with an IT solution that they provide the support. If they can't provide me support on what they give then I expect them to give a solution that they can support.

If the company won't pay to train the IT staff on Apple then don't supply Apple and get the Mac users trained on the Windows platform and use the same App where possible.

Most of the Mac owners I know don't know a lot about computing. They either got one bought for them or purchased one because everyone else on their course did. That doesn't mean they're stupid, they're just not that into computers and may ask daft questions from time to time. I knew a girl who didn't even know she was using an iMac - it was just a "PC" to her.

The whole Mac snobbery thing is a bit of a myth. Unfortunately all the Mac zealots and fanboys shout pretty loudly online and just generally make the average Mac user look worse than they actually are. I must admit though, the Apple Mac adverts do add fuel to the fire. They are a bit pretentious and border on false advertising at times.

As a Mac user myself, I first bought one based on the fact I was tired of Windows yet didn't want to mess around with Linux. OS X seemed exactly what I was looking for and I haven't really looked back since. The hardware itself is pretty stylish which I like, but I don't go around posing with it (it never leaves the house). In fact, the MacBook I'm typing on now has been DIY repaired by me with a bit of duct tape - so long as it works I'm not too bothered. I definitely don't go around wiping finger marks off it!

It's an OS, not a lifestyle. Admittedly, I'm sure some use it as a vain attempt to get some sort of recognition because they haven't gone with the paradigm of buying a Windows box, but to suggest nearly all Mac users are evangelical about their own hardware and software is just plain stupid.

I own a Mac. I own Windows boxes and I have a couple of Laptops running Ubuntu, and if anything I harp on about Linux. I've been using computers since I was 4 when I used AmigaDOS, and I've been though quite a few different computers and operating systems in my time. I know quite a bit about the ins and outs of Windows, and I'm learning how OS X and Linux function as well, so I'd say I'm pretty non-bias.

But, I prefer OS X. If others want to shallowly harp on about it to get some sort of attention, that's up to them, but don't just generalise all people who use macs into one rather shoddily constructed demographic, it smacks of ignorance :/

Three of my housemates use Macs, the other three (including me) don't. So there is quite a large amount of banter about it.

For general use I'd quite like to give OSX a good try out.. but I don't want to buy a Mac. Also I don't want to try a Hackintosh because it looks like too much effort - unless someone convinces me otherwise.

I wouldn't dare use a Mac for work, but for general use ie internet browsing etc, I would actually like to give it a good try.

I have a MBP as my old rig was stolen. I wanted something which was powerful, long lasting and will hold its value for about a year which the MBP did. I was not interested in a windows laptop due to being tired of it and just wanting something which works.

It looks rather nice too.

I wonder how many actually take it as gospel on the Apple FAQ's saying that there is no need to run an AV program on a Mac.

Not only that. When I went into an "Apple Store" once (entirely by mistake, honest :p) I got chatting to some pasty-fasted sandal wearing sales guy. He asked what I used, so I told him XP Pro (at the time) on desktop, Debian and CentOS on my servers, and a Linux test station.

"hahaha"... his derision attracted the attention of his colleagues. Didn't I know that Macs not only out perform Windows in everything, but you don't need an AV or a firewall on a Mac. Mac's can't be hacked, so you can just open all those ports and leave the thing running naked.

Needless to say I walked out and didn't go back.

st helens college? brooke street or tech campus? :)

Or Carmel College? I'm a "Sintellinser" by birth, but I've lived in Southport for years now. I went to St Helens College before Uni; I wonder if Dave Rice is still there? Great guy :D
