stupid question?

Evening Big.Wayne

Using the 8-pin connector

I've been playing with the vcore voltages and i've realise i need to really step up the indicated voltage for it to impact on the actual voltage. i.e. I've set the voltage to 1.5350 which is displayed as 1.490 in the uguru utility and 1.510 in CPU-z.

With that i've managed to get it stable at 380fsb x9 1:1.25 (DDR2-950) although load temps are hitting 72C and vcore drops to 1.460V. I'm considering a case upgrade soon cos this one was fairly cheap (i was a student at the time :D). Will that improve temps?

Haven't played with the memory dividers yet

going to leave prime95 to run for another hour or so to make sure its fairly stable.

after that, should i push on with the FSB?

what's the very maximum voltage/temperature i can work to?

okey dokes.... got it on 400MHz-FSB x8 with DDR2-1000

cpu currently at 74C and the Vcore under load is 1.470 (i upped it one more notch :D)

like the look of that antec :) i suppose i need a clear path for the air to to go through the intake, across the tuniq and straight out the exhaust... at the moment (because of the position of the fixed case fans) i don't have that. (would show you a picture if i could find my damn digital camera lead!!!)

so, been priming for 30 mins and so far so good

Edit: Just started getting warning sounds from the MB... CPU got up to 75C and PSU was at 80C! have stopped prime95 cos i'm guessing alarms aren't good (unless switched off :D)

for the time being i can open up the side of the case and get a desk fan on there while we're testing lol! thanks for the pic info above, by the looks of things a new case is top priority. are we now looking for the lowest voltage we can get 400x8 running at?

thanks for the info setter :) i've had the vcore at 1.51 at idle but under load it drops to about 1.47.

Hi Plec,

It's going well :) I'm really happy with that we're achieving and it's certainly all down to Big.Wayne! I hope after this he changes his name to Overclocking Oracle!! :) We'll have to look into ways we can make this accessable to all new overclockers... with Big.Wayne's agreement of course :)

Currently battling 2 issues
- final push to get 400MHz x9 stable
- (surprise surprise) cooling

Although for the second point i shall be investing a new case soon to really boost the airflow (any suggestions welcome) :)

Will get back on it tonight!

um...i've never heard of lapping but i'm guessing from the above that it's sandpapering the CPU and heatsink?? I'm an ex-soldier and still not that brave lol!

back to the OCing...

Got 400MHz x8 running at 1.420V idle and 1.390 under load. it seems to be fine (load temps around 63C

currently running the memory at 4:5 so will try some other ratios and report back

i think before i do any more testing i think i need to sort out my cooling. last stress test i did started pushing 80C on the cpu and pwm and if i'm going to be upping the vcore even more i think i should look at replacing the case to maximise airflow.
do you think the antec 300 will be enough?

Evening Big Wayne et al... after a very relaxing weekend i'm back to the OCing...
going to try what you've suggested but to start with i can confirm that 8x400 is stable...
now going to try 6x400 :D

bluescreened after 2 minutes...
load voltage is 1.50-1.52
idle voltage is 1.54
temps didn't have enough time to get too high lol!
can i push the vcore higher or is there something else limiting it??

hi ben90!
unfortunately no updates as yet i'm afraid due to time constraints... plus going away for a long weekend tomorrow so won't be able to get back at it until monday! will keep you posted with any developments!

  • How high can the FSB-MHz be raised?
  • How high can the CPU-MHz be raised?
  • How high can the Memory-MHz be raised?
  • How high can the NBCC-MHz be raised?

Will be back home this afternoon so will hopefully be able to confirm some of the above :)
not looked into other cooling alternatives at the moment... need to do that soon!

quick update... currently on 425x9 = 3.4MHz with ram running at 1063

All seems ok so far

Edit: Prime95 worker 2 stops saying rounding was 0.5 expected less than 0.4

what do you think i should do?

will try pushing the vcore till i get a little more luck

temps are already at 70C though... is it now time for a cooling rethink or should i be bold lol?
