Sub £400 graphics card for 1440p gaming

Im not in the habit of making spurious statements. I bought it to play Fallout 4 at the time and it plays the games I play (hitman, fortnite, command and conquer, xcom2) beautifully. Are you going to tell me I am wrong about that too?

No, thats fine. But at least make your posts clearer. Your on a enthusiasts forum stating a card plays 1440 'beautifully' when it won't play any new games anywhere near beautifully.

I know this because I owned a 390x. Infact I only just sold it a few weeks ago, a great card but it isn't a 1440 GPU. Certianly not on newer games, with anything but low - which definetly isn't 'beautiful'. Now if you listed the games you played and then stated that, it wouldve held more weight.

Hi all,

I've recently upgraded my monitor from a 24" 1080p to 27" 1440p and think I need to upgrade my graphics card. I'm currently running a gtx 1060 6 GB and I'm very aware of the new 3 series and big Navi but they're out of my price range and I'm looking to get something pretty soon. I'm not bothered about having everything on Ultra, ideally just to be able to run things on high at 60fps.

Any recommendations please?

You do not need any of the new cards from any one for your monitor period unless you want ray tracing. New the new gpus are all geared to 4k and massive over kill for 1440p. I have an asus 5700xt strix and i max out all games but to be honest my sapphire vega 64 was as good and quieter. As you found out you never upgrade anything unless your pc isnt cutting it. Waist of money

Well I am probably going to get a 5700 xt, I think the general consensus is that it isn't good value for money due to the next generation of graphics cards coming out. I think it will be at least 6 months until they are readily available though, so do I really want to wait that long?

I think it depends on when you want to start the new performance that card will bring.

The 5700XT is a great card and still a good purchase if you don't want to wait.

However, it's how long before the sub £400 cards take to materialise from the new series, both Rad and Green.

I have jumped ship and bought a new 2070 super as it was a good a deal and I had the cash now. Also was the best time to sell my 980ti before secondhand prices fall through the floor. So my new card cost me £240.

To a lot of people on here, This was madness!!! but should I wait 5 months? 6 months?

Nah. I have an amazing card at a great price that will do me now for a good while.

I too bought a new 2070 Super and it’s brilliantly capable at both 2560x1440 and 3440x1440. No hurry now to upgrade, I’ll wait until next year.

p.s. it cost me £400 new at the end of September. (only £50 on top of the £350 I got for my 1080ti)

If you're going to buy old tech brand new then I would advise to buy it from the giant who has returns window until 31st January due to Christmas rather than a traditional independent pc hardware retailer :). At least it gives you a bit of time I guess.

Or perhaps there will be black Friday deals making some of it worthwhile.

What would you guys suggest at 1080p? (Planning to go up to 1440p next year)

I would defo wait to see what is about in the new year.
All the new cards are way over the top for 1080p.

I think that might be seen as competitor hinting and we know what they are like for that at the moment. ;)

However, they are defo getting lined up for black Friday as all the cards have shot up to £500

Just done the same @Muso as it could be Jan or March before any decent availability. Possibly longer. RMA'd my Vega 56 2 months ago, and there's so little choice (new) that this seems the best option.

Can imagine there will be something decent on black friday for the old cards. Surely!

I think that is why all the prices have shot up, so on the day they can say reduced from.... Only thing I have ever gotten a good deal on in the past was a Bluetooth electric Toothbrush... still going strong, oh and a knife sharpener.
