Need to help a mate with a spec for new pc.

no serious gaming, maybe a gtx460 or slightly lower, no hdd.

He requested 8GB Ram and an i5 if possible.

Thanks

os?

i2500k £156
gigabyte z68ap-d3 £85
gelid tranquilo £26
Kingston hyperx genesis grey 8gb pc3-12800 1600mhz £35
lepa w series 500w £48
bitfenix merc beta £32
Ocuk dvdrw oem £18
gtx460 £?
win7 hp 64bit oem £80

£480 before adding the graphics card and delivery, will have to drop the i2500k down to i2120(or similar) to get £400 Inc gpu

Ok for £400 there is low gaming expectations. And i5 is flattening the budget.

What about a lap top?

Alternatively use AMD and onboard graphics
Gigabyte GA-880GM-USB3 AMD 880G (AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard £64.98

AMD Athlon II X2 Dual Core 250 3.00GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail £47.99

What about this - uses DDR3 (you only need 4gb) it costs less than the i5 CPU on its own - you can use the stock cooler - you can use your resources to buy other better spec components.

Then when the time is right you swap out the MB, CPU, keep your other quality kit and install your next rig? Just an idea.

Needing an OS takes £80 chunk out of an already small budget, unless he's a student and can source a cheap copy, you're going to struggle to get a gaming build for £320

Edit:

Bout best I could do, uses an older gfx card, but solid base system able to take future upgrades

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i3-2100 3.10GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor - Retail £91.99
1 x MSI Z68A-G43-G3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard £86.58
1 x Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-Bit - OEM (GFC-02050) £79.99
1 x Lepa W-Series 500W '80 Plus' Power Supply - with FREE LEPA Hard Drive Enclosure £47.99
1 x OcUK GeForce 9800 GT OC 512MB GDDR3 PCI-Express Graphics Card - OEM £37.99
1 x Cooler Master Elite 335 Case - Black £29.99
1 x Kingston HyperX Blu 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1600C9AD3B1K2/4G) £19.99
Total : £408.62 (includes shipping : £11.75).

My mate just decided to let me know what his current pc spec is.

It is an acer aspire m3910 with 3gb ram and an i3 i think, claims to have 1GB intel graphics. As long as the upgrade is better than this, it would be good. should be able to take other stuff from that pc too.

Okay just read your post - this was what I had in mind before your post.

That's no better than the i3 system he already has though.

Unfortunately you won't get an i5 system with Windows for that budget. Best bet is to try and find out what board is in the Acer, he might be able to just get a new PSU, GPU and some RAM.

Or if he could reuse the Windows key from that system then he could save £80, although I'm not sure if you're allowed to use OEM copies on more than one system.

Ok thanks, i really need to get a closer look at his PC in order to properly help him. Thanks for everybody's help.

Only problem is that it has a warranty sticker on the back. 1 month warranty left. He wants to sell it with that 1 month warranty, but i think ripping it or upgrading would be much better right?

All these posts are the reason i love OCUK +Forums +members :D

True, I made it before I knew there was a rig already!

Final thought - ebay that rig or sell it to a mate - additional dosh may help reach the goal.

Cheers Pod

problem is, he is planning to take the HDD out to use in new PC. I think upgrading would be best, selling just wouldn't work out as i dont think you would get much fo it anyway?

well take the dvdrw(does it have one and is it sata) as well and the win7, it'll be oem and technically you shouldn't install it on a new pc as it's 'ment' to be tied to 1 pc but as he wouldn't be using the old pc you'll be fine.

if he does that you can knock £98 off my spec but that still £382 without counting a graphics card and the delivery cost, so as I said you'll need to drop the i2500k down to a lower cpu for now and upgrade in the future or stick with the intergrated graphics for the time being and get a graphics card in the future(new ati/amd and nvidia cards are due over the next few months.
