Sub Forum request

Is it possible to have a sub forum for basic camera users. My impression of this forum as that it is very much aligned to semi pro users or at least those with a very detailed knowledge of cameras and photography.

I take photos as a record of things rather than the pure artistic or accurate reproduction and most of my posts seem to be derided as I don't use an expensive DSLR.

I have stopped seeking advice on here which is sad because OCUK is a huge source of information.

You get all sorts of questions asked on here, I wouldn't worry about it. Some of us like me, just muddle through :D

If you have a query, just ask. There are varying amounts of knowledge in different areas on here, granted that it's a small amount of people that post now, but you should get an answer. Failing that, there's always the TP forums. There's one I used to visit that is specifically for compacts when I started out, but I've forgotten the name of that :(
 
Just create a thread and ask. Most people are more than happy to help, and the forum is actually pretty good at answering 'stupid' questions without looking down on people, and giving basic advice. :)

Sadly not my experience of the photography lot on here. Particularly as I don't have a DSLR.

Haha we only look down on pro users of any camera system other than our own. :P Of course there's a lot of self-justification of people who've just bought a camera being in every single thread regardless of the relevance saying that OP should get whatever they just did (I'm guilty of that on occasion). You'll occasionally get someone hopping into a "recommend me a £50 compact camera" thread saying that OP should really be buying a DSLR kit worth £1000, but for the most part there are plenty of people here who can actually be helpful about that stuff - it's just a consequence of the way forums work that they don't dominate this forum. Pro users who obsess over gear and shoot as a hobby rather than as documentation get more enjoyment out of photography, and so are more likely to hang around here when they're not asking gear questions than people using decidedly consumer gear.
 
Yeah the camera brand hierarchy over here goes something like this Canon=Nikon > Sony > Olympus > Pentax > Lomo > Pinhole > iPhone > Leica. :p

I haven't really seen any of that? You've had some good feedback generally, a detailed response on your SX50 and an expected response to the K30 query , you will be assimilated by the Nikonites! :D

As there are many photographers who have started off where you have you'll get good feedback which may save you some money. Buying into the K30 kit is a great option at a low cost, where things get a bit more complicated is if you get into photography and want to expand. You may possibly find the Pentax system limiting. This would then mean selling on at a loss and then building with another system. If you started off in a more capable system you would be able to keep lenses and upgrade the body for example.

If you're happy to bite the bullet on your first purchase and maybe write it off if you do get into photography more then it really doesn't matter. I started off with a bridge camera (Panny FZ30), then moved onto a Canon 500D twin lens kit... I should've listened to people in here at the time as I quickly found the limits of that kit (poor lenses and AF performance for sport), so ended up selling for a loss. As long as you understand that the certain look you get from a full frame DSLR is going to be difficult from a much smaller sensor, you'll do fine. I liked my Panny FZ30, but I'll be honest, I really didn't know a lot about photography back then so didn't really push it!

Take advice for what it is, just other people opinions. No-one is telling you what to do, so you can just ignore what doesn't fit your needs and weigh up all the rest that does apply?

There are two things certain on photography forums - Canon and Nikon users hate each other, and both will unite in their dislike for Leica's overpriced jewellery. :p And Hasselblad isn't there because it doesn't belong on the scale. No one here is opinionated enough about them.
