Hello all...

I am currently thinking of changing my sub and wondered if anyone had any suggestions?

1) Budget would be around £2,500 (give or take a few quid)
2) Room size is approx 6m x 7m
3) Current sub is an M&K V125, which gives a reasonable punch, but seems a bit small in the current room
4) Speakers are B&W 803S (front), B&W HTM3 (centre) and B&W CDM 1NT SE's (rears)
5) Would two subs be better than one?
6) I am looking for a sub that goes low, but is quick and punchy. Have had some subs in the past which just arent quick enough...
7) Not too fussed if its forward or down firing, but would prefer forward

Cheers
Guy

Irrelevent. Bass is omni directional.

oh my sub outperforms MX-350 Mk II.

Not entirely sure I agree with you, I have always found that forward firing subs to be better for movies (more air movement and percieved "slam") and down firing to be better for music (better air dispersal and punch)... but these are purely my own thoughts.

Cheers for the SVS link, it's not a brand I am overly familiar with and certainly one I will try and have a look at. The SVS PB12-Plus/2 looks to do the job.

Sounds like your subwoofer is reproducing mid-bass tbh. What is your crossover point (amp/sub), are you amp crossover, and bypassing the subs own crossover?

You should be able to get something really nice with that money.

I've been a Hi-Fi enthusiast for years, and speakers more than any other product must be auditioned at home before purchase. Ignore reviews and trust only your ears as its how they interact with your room and system that will determine how they sound. I've heard speakers sound great in one location and lousy in another!

With that budget I'd check out a few dealers and see what they can let you take home - i'm sure they'll be keen to help!

for movies i'm happy to back up the SVS subs, I have a PB12+ and its spectacular....

and for the good news, if you can hang around for them to get over here, SVS are finally exporting the PC-Ultra again to the UK.....its a tall cylinder sub with quite stupid volume levels....heh

my only gripe with my PB12+ is that it doesnt quite keep up with my speakers compared to the REL Strata 5 i owned....however my speaker are Monitor Audio GR10's which are so tight and fast its amazing.....the PB12+ isnt bad exactly, i'm just extremely fussy over the integration for stereo music and a small part of me wishes i hadnt had to sell the Strata 5 to fund the PB12+ and could have kept both...lol

otherwise, the DD15 as mentioned, I believe a few folks reckon the 18 slows it down a little but provides far larger headroom, so the 15 is probably the wiser option given you want speed.....

then there is the REL Stentor 3, also the B&W 800 series sub is pretty good apparently....

or of course, if you have a spare room next door to the cinema room, then built and IB sub....(Infinite Baffle)........just get 4 large drivers, some power amps and make a hole in the wall :D
