Subnetting for Simpletons

Just get a firewall, connect up a switch to one of it's ports and him to the switch, then create very restrictive firewall rules (just based on what he needs) and then he will have to ask you each time to open ports for him.

Cheers for the replies. Tomorrow it's boom or bust! "Give me notice or let me get on with the work." Hope i'm on here with a smile on my face tomorrow night.

Just get some rough costs for doing what this guy wants, present it to management and when they say 'it's too expensive' then he loses.

Yeah, but at this stage I really don't care. I used to regulary stay on 'till 7-8pm helping out, but now i'm actually working under hours. In at 9.30, out by 4.30. Not what I want to be doing but it's a case of **** it, i'm off.

Makes me look bad because I can't be ars*d with doing stuff they ask me to.

I've been running network monitoring software for a few months now, and he lives on ebay, autotrader and screwfix. Thought about suggesting official use of the software, but this would make me seriously unpopular with the other emplyoees. Also streams radio1 and downloads movies all day!!

Not really one for snitching on anyone, that's managements problem.

Anyway, tomorrow I either drop my pants and take it up the back door, or stand firm, and tell them to contact me once they've reached a decision. I need a holiday anyway :)

No.

All pc's, printers, nas drives, server and router connected to the cisco switch. Quasimodos (a change from macboy:) ) stuff connected to the netgear doodah which is connected to the cisco switch.

We have nothing else

good luck mate, i hope management hear what youre saying..

i hate idiots like ones youre describing. unfortunately as your general users become more computer savy they like to think they know everything about computers when they clearly dont. its dangerous if things get to the level like yours..

Funny how you never say half the things you plan on saying once the adrenaline starts pumping.

Went into work but my boss wasn't at his desk so had to sit like a lemon for 10mins. When he finally turned up...

"I'm not here to educate all and sundry on how to do my job. This is the username and password he requires to join the domain. How he does so is down to him"

"Where are you going?" "Home, bye"

I have to admit to a burning curiosity about this. I want to know more, I want to hear that you laid down the law and smacked down the idiot!

Nothing like that happend. I talked to my line manager for no more than a minute and went home.

Funny thing, the consultant phoned me on Friday, saying that he'd heard of my walkout. Said that he'd decided to keep away from the place for a few months aswell because he had to pander to macboys demands.

Also mentioned that there may be opening as a technician working for his company soon as he has too much work on. Guess I have to grit my teeth for a little more.

Why not just block the ip addresses he is downloading movies from, if using torrent block does ports. Remember you are liable as network manager!!!

Yeah i would agree here, i cant believe you noticed he was downloading films and didn't stop it right away.

there's no call to ask management about it either, your the boss of the IT department. Just do it, and if asked why explain your self.

Its simple

Well, i don't see it as my problem. But if im responsible, maybe I should. But I was just trying out the software which, legally, i'm not allowed to do, i think.

Anyway, he's the winger at work. We have a routine where some of us make cups of tea/coffee for each other. Winger actually wrote a letter to the management whining why I made tea for other people. "Couldn't they make tea for themselves?"

Of course nothing happend regarding the letter, but having to work with a back-stabbing idiot is arghhhhh! The other tea drinkers laughed themselves silly when they found out.
