Seen this in today's Daily Mail that Steve Mclaren is on the verge of making small unfashionable FC Twente champions in Holland today if they match or better the Ajax result.

Without question the England job was too big for him (Blame the FA for that one), I for one would not becry him his success out there. Watching some of the matches on ESPN, his brand of football is really really good.

Daily Mail said:
On Sunday afternoon there will be 20,000 here — and another 35,000 in the city centre — to witness in glorious colour as McClaren leads his Twente team to a first Dutch league title away at NAC Breda.
That, of course, is the hope. It is held locally and also across Holland because McClaren, referred to here as ‘a gentleman’, is at the head of a popular front coming in from the east in a country where Ajax in the west have long been dominant.
On Sunday, should Twente match Ajax’s result in Nijmegen, McClaren will become the first English coach to win a league abroad since Bobby Robson at Porto 14 years ago. But it will not be straightforward.

Story Here

I think the accent went a long way to securing this title.

Even if they don't win it, it's an excellent achievement for Steve :)

He sounded like an extra in a Grolsch advert after only being in the Country for two weeks. The man is a grade-a idiot. It says more about the Dutch league than anything else.

Have been following the Dutch league this year, Steve has done a great job over there. For some lols, check out Ajax's goal difference compared to Twente's!

That would be a great achieveent if he can manage it.

Is he still talking with a Dutch accent or has he remembered he's English now?

To be fair I think hes always been a good coach, just not great at dealing with big players and their egos. By the time Sven left, senior players had the run of the England squad and Mclaren unfortunately wasnt the man to change things.

With Twente he hasnt had to deal with big players, its been down to his ability as a coach and he has done a truly fantastic job in taking a club of Twente's size to the brink of a title. If a Dutch manager came over here and took Fulham to similar heights people would be showering him with praise.

He might be a bit of a knob but good luck Steve :p.

Its almost nuts that a team that have score 41 more goals are a point behind, I mean its not 10 goals, not 20, but FOURTY ONE, but thats how it goes. Twente have been a very good team for 4 years though, since before McClown went there, there were top 4 contenders for 2 years before he got there by the looks of it and Ajax haven't won the title for like 6-7 years.

Twente as a club have done very well, I'm not entirely sure they wouldn't be exactly where they were without McClown though as obviously the success train was well on the way before he got there and a lot of the better players were already there. From what I recall it was really a decent young side thats simply improving a little as the squad plays more and gets more experienced, I'm also trying to remember, didn't they fire the previous manager despite him having done brilliantly for them, they just randomly got rid of a great manager who built the team and got some random English dude in to take over?

Mclaren is a bad manager.
He should never of been allowed near a football club again after his disastrous and incompetent time as England coach.
In fact, he should have been dragged out and strung up by his testicles out side of soho square.

He was not sacked. He went to Schalke in Germany. Came back to Holland with his tail between his legs before his first season in Germany had finished.

And McClaren has had to put up with his best players being sold to keep the club afloat. So no he hasn't had a really easy ride in Holland.

Blame the FA for being stupid enough to appoint a manager that was obviously not good enough, don't blame the manager for being made to think he was good enough by the FA.

I'm glad he's done well, and got his managerial career back on track, I however will be happy that he won't come anywhere near the England team again.

exaggerate much

Blame the FA for not having the foresight in employing him in the first place. It's quite conceivable that he could do a Roy Hodgson and take a another club in England onto some euro success. I also seem to remember some of the best football Utd played and Derby prior to that were under the coaching of Steve Mclaren
