Suggest me a HSF

Hi,

I've been looking at the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro and read some reviews.

One of the reviews I read included a audio file of how noisy it was at full speed - it was pretty loud & as they said in the review I also noticed it going slightly up and down sometimes which would really be annoying.

Can anyone suggest me a nice HSF please?

Socket 775 & I'm planning to eventually stick a 3.6GHZ+ Dual core (hopefully the extreme edition - the one with 1066 FSB etc.) under it so it'll need to be able to cool that well as well.

Thanks
- Craig.

Scythe Ninja is the best there is, although its a little pricey.

By the sound of it (no pun intented) you have already visited spcr.
They recomend the ninja, and the nexus 120mm fan is the quietest fan they have ever reviewed. Makes a good combination if i say so myself...

You mean the:
Scythe Ninja Plus Fanless HeatPipe Cooler?

Can't find a nexus fan anywhere on OcUK, do they stock them on there?

--Edit--
Just found the Nexus on a competitor and compared it to the top one here: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Akasa_Fans.html - that one has more CFM and is only 18db rather than 22.8db? Surely it's a better fan then the nexus - moves more air and is quieter?

Thanks,
- Craig.

I expect the Akasa fan takes its measurements differently or is lieing a little. Can't be sure as SPCR haven't tested it agaist the nexus.

As mentioned, the nexus is only needed for silence enthusiasts, the one that comes with the ninja is ok for most people.

Edit: Its fanless for low end cpus and cpus under low load. Being a fanless cooler it is very high performance with a little airflow.

i think honestly your going to need no case fans and a fanless psu beofre the noise of the scythe fan becomes a problem lol
I didn't think it was that good at all, it resonated at most speeds with or without case isolation and i could hear it over just about everything. Airflow was rubbish too.

no such problem with mine  ive only got 3 fans in my pc - the scythe, a rear 120mm case fan and my x-pro 460w psu's 120mm fan. the rest of the system is fanless/silent. apart from a little motor noise, which is only really apparent when you open the case, its extremely quiet. as for airflow, it doesnt need a lot. my 3ghz/ 1.55v opteron 148 is loading right now @ 52c:)

yep it'll fit any 775 board to the best of my knowledge

Yeah, I read a semi-review on it and it says it just won't fit the boards with RAM close to the CPU... won't be a problem for me then :)

--Edit--
Just compared my current stock cooler to the Ninja cooler (11cm length, as in across the top) and it's only slightly longer. Might have to move the ram one slot across which won't be a problem, but I doubt i'll have to.
--/Edit--

Think I'm gonna go for this HSF then :)

One last question:

When I get it should I face it towards the back orange exhaust fans?

The fans are on, its weird... the camera caught them like that :p

--Edit--

Question for James - will any of the little battery thingys on the board get in the way? Or will the RAM get in the way?

Thanks,
Craig.

yes most definately. also the fan should sit on top of your ram without causing any problems, assuming your ram isnt taller than the usual stuff it does with my s939 board:)

I have the Corsair XMS3200 Pro DDR which is chunkier than usual, any ideas if it's taller?

:p

Oh, also, did ya see my edit on my last reply?>

oooh. it is taller that ram, yes. You'll almost defiantly have to move the ram if the fan sits oover the ram slots. shouldnt cause you any problems though:)

edit: no, the capacitors shouldnt obstruct the heatsink at all:) the base of ther heatsink is quite narrow, and there is a large clearance for the large part of the 'sink:)

edit2: anyway, ive just had a google and there are peopel running the scythe ninja on your board, so it's all good:)

Not a problem if I have to move them one slot along :)

Also, would I put the fan right next to my 2 exhuasts (going to be getting a wavemaster which will still have the 2 exhausts I have now) or would I put it on the other side like you have? I'm guessing it's an intake fan on the ninja judging on your placement.
