My online Tesco DVD rental list is now fairly short, and I like to keep it topped up with about 25 films, but having watched pretty much most of the films I want to see can anyone recommend some lesser known films to watch, I'm not into any specific genre as such, just would like to see that hidden gem that you might have been raving about down the pub.

Not all what I would call hidden gems but all worth a look if you haven't seen them:

The Departed
The Prestige
Pan's Labyrinth
Dead Man's Shoes
Inside Man
Man On Fire
Apocalypto
Blood Diamond
Children Of Men

One of my favourites is a little-known British film called Purely Belter. Set in Newcastle, it's about two lads who are trying to get season tickets for the footy. Has a lot of well-known Geordie actors in it (and a good deal of kids from Byker Grove!) and is just a really touching and funny film. The most heartbreaking part has to be where the main kid goes looking round all the pubs for his dad (Tim Healy) and finds him singing 'You Are Always On My Mind' on the karaoke machine; the character completely missing the irony of the words he's singing. Top film.

I watched a film recently which isn't particularly well known, and I was surprised by its quality. I thought it would just be light entertainment, but it turned out to be as mind-bending an experience as Fight Club was. Revolver.

that was well known, but it wasnt well recieved.

Revolver made no sense. It started well, then GR obviously got scared that everyone didn't 'get' how clever he was. The film then proceeded to disappear up it's own bung hole.

Dark City - Rufus Sewell wakes up in a hotel room next to a dead hooker with total amnesia. Is he a serial killer and why is it always night? A bit of a mindbender which divides opinions like marmite.

Mr Vampire - Completely nuts hong kong film about vampires which move by jumping and can be controlled by putting postits on their forheads. Very funny, great wirework.

Red Rock West - A plot with more twists than a curly wurly set in a small american town.

Die Hard!

Also:

Equilibrium
Man On Fire
Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle
Silent Hill
Find Me Guilty
Children of Men
Gone in 60 Seconds (purely for the cars :P)

Bubble Boy

Fantasticly random film about a guy who has to live in a bubble but has to travel accross the states to stop the woman he loves marrying a prat.

One of Jake Gellenyhall's early comedies.

Possibly the definition of 'hidden gem' in my opinion. And Billy Connolly turns up!

I recently rented The Matador. I was expecting a pretty standard Hollywood fare but was pleasantly surprised. It's very funny, and very well done.
