Hey guys,

I've currently got an OCZ Vertex 4 SSD for boot and a temperamental 2TB WD external which will probably need replacing or removing from its chassis soon, and I'm now looking for a 'main' HDD for standard use: games, files, media, etc.

Not sure what size, make or model is worthwhile price-wise. My old disc was only 120GB and I think I only really used around 80GB the whole time I had the PC.

I've read reviews on the WD Black 1TB, but I'm put off by the fact it's considered a little noisy. I'm also not sure if 1TB is too excessive?

For that reason I was looking at a WD Blue 500GB for around £50, but if truth be told I'm not sure what's the best solution for my needs.

My priorities are that it is reliable (3-5 years) and quiet.

Advice?

From advice on here, I now buy 2 drives at the same time. Get two 5OOGB not one 1TB.
I have used all brands in the past with no clear winners. Seagate has proved the most reliable. Lacie being the worst.

Seagate has proved the most reliable.

hard to recommend these days as they now offer just a 1 year warranty with their normal drives.

with the WD blue you get 2, red 3 and black 5. that's not to say any of them won't fail. of course they do and you should always have a backup but it's reassuring to think they have a bit of confidence to offer these warranties without pushing up the cost too much.

i've only had my 500GB blue for a week but i'm very happy with how quiet it is compared to my old samsung f3. i've even put my OS on it and i can't tell the difference. the f3 is supposedly much faster but meh... :p
