Suit brand hierarchy

I once spent a lot on a Hugo Boss suit, it fitted great and looked good. I went in the wardrobe (in suit protector) for a few years until a wedding invite, out it came, it suddenly looked a bit dated and I’d put a few inches on around the waist and it didn’t look good.

I’d never spend similar again unless there was a need for wearing it several times in a year, then you risk looking the same in every photo. As others have said, well fitting is the key, don’t rule out M&S or even hiring one of its a one off event

I tend to go to Moss Bros, as has been mentioned they usually don’t fit after a year, even worse for me as I tend to fluctuate by a stone or so depending on if I’m gyming/running consistently or not

Do you guys get Slaters in England? I think they originally started in Glasgow but have never done me wrong. Even of the rack you can get loads of adjustments made for free onsite. Prices are very good also.
Slaters have stores all over the country these days, I got my last suit from their Chelmsford branch. The suit was a good fit, the staff were friendly and they managed all the adjustments. Highly recommended.

As others have said, fit is the most important so either buy form somewhere that will do a proper fitting and tailoring.

Agree with a lot here. Take your budget, find a recommended local tailor and find out how much to alter a suit, then use the remaining budget to buy one that you like and has a nice feel. Forget everything else.

Last suit I bought was from Moss Bros... ended up being about £450, but that was with a shirt, tie and belt also, which the helpfull lady helped me match, lol! I can't remember what the price of the suit by itself was.

i didnt actually look at the price when trying on the various options, just bought the one that looked/fitted best.

I really like it, decent fabric, great look and importantly, its a good fit.

Same as some people above, I only wear suits for weddings, funerals and job interviews really, so I tend to find my existing suit looks dated or no longer fits when come to wear it again!

A well fitting suit in a classic style should have barely changed over the last 20-30 years. I don't think suits should look too dated unless you are going for fashion brands/styles. Something along the lines of
  • Jacket - single breasted, double vented, 2 button, wool, plain jetted or perhaps flap pockets, medium length, slim-ish fit
  • Nothing extravagant in the lapel design
  • Navy or grey (avoid patterns)
  • Straight trousers, slim-ish fit
As mentioned in previous post I rate Suit Supply for this

Maintaining the same size is a different problem :(

In the past I’ve spent loads on suites… but the truth is that I hardly wear them and ended up giving most of them to charity.

Now a days, I just have the two… a brown one that I paid loads for and a black one that I got on discount.

I do have a few suit jackets that I wear on regular bases, mainly with jeans and polo… need to look like a tech bro lol

At my work place it’s quite funny, the people in suites are normally the lower grades trying to make an impression. The higher up the scale, the more scruffy the person is.. the MDs are normally in hiking gear or running gear as they just come back from the onsite gym or been for a hike around the estate.

100% this - Never once looked at the "brand" - if it fits well and priced fine - I'll buy it.

Just fly out to India and get a tailor made suit for about 50 pence

there's probably a million videos on youtube about it, it's like turkey teeth but actually good.

What we need is some of them migrating over here and opening up shops.

We can’t all be pretend MMA fighting porn stars you know…some of us actually live in the real world

Well it goes both ways, if you are too fat or too skinny then you will always look fat, or skinny, but well fitting clothes can hide a multitude of sins, and well fitting doesn't mean it has to be expensive.

Money can't make you look good in a suit, I mean just look at Jacob Ress-mogg, he's probably got more money than everyone on this thread put together, yet he still can't find a suit that fits him... or his son, or find nice looking shoes, for that matter...

Exhibit A:

I suspect that’s a deliberate style choice more than anything else.
