So I need to pick up a suit, the last thing I wore like that was a school uniform, ive always wore casual (never worked for someone else, went straight into self employment so never had the need for smart clothes, and rented a tux for a friends wedding)

Where would be the best place to get something fitted without spending a fortune?

Do you actually need something fitted?

If not then Next will do one for about £120. You can get a suit from TM Lewin for about £300 and they'll take your measurements and adjust the suit accordingly.

£300 isn't bad.

Cheers.

Go into a shop and try some on, there are some very decent off the rack suits available.

It all depends on your body shape - I'm lucky, most normal suits tend to just fit me without the need for tailoring.

I'd go Moss or Next for budget range (sub £150 - abut half that if you have a Designer Outlet near you, I got a nice navy Next sharkskin suit for £75 at a McArthur Glen last year) and then Charles Tyrwhitt or TM Lewin for the next bracket up (£180-£250)

What's it for? Business? Wedding? Funeral?

Next suits are fine.

I got a Pierre Cardin in a sale last year in Debenhams £300 reduced to £150 and that is (was) nice but it got a tear in it the second time I wore it that couldn't be 'invisibly repaired' :(

What's it for? One off event like a wedding or more frequent wear for work?

Unfortunately im oddly shaped and I know from experience of when I rented the tux they had some trouble getting it looking smart.

Its for business, not day to day but visiting new high end clients interested in my services/product.

Moss Bros, TM Lewin, etc. Go in and get measured up and pick/try something off the shelf.

You can also try places like Next, Burtons or even branded outlets e.g. Ted Baker, if you have any close by.

Worst case: get something that nearly fits then get it altered at a tailor for a few extra quid. :)

Just bare in mind that Next have some lines that they only sell in their outlet Next and these don't seem to be as good quality. But then they are also very cheap. I got a suit for £30 which doesn't actually look too bad, but I doubt will stand up to any real use.

If you are wearing it daily then consider a machine washable suit. M&S do a good range.

I'd be very skeptical about a machine washable suit tbh... but M&S are as good as anyone else for an off the rack suit + pretty good value usually

go for whatever fits best and get it adjusted if needed
