The Sunday Trading Act 1994 needs to be scrapped. The benefits include increased revenue for the government, more people will be in work and more flexibility for people to buy products on a weekend.

Discuss.

If you can prove that the increase in revenue justifies the additional costs involved, and that current workers' rights won't be affected (i.e. being forced to work longer hours/longer weeks) and there is a significant effort in reducing current joblessness, then go for it.

I think that there should be a working week so that families can spend time together, if this was to be abolished I feel that there should be some safeguards that llimit how many Sunday hours you do a year.

I think it is somewhat outdated, given that we now live in a society where people work long hours, at weekends and overnight.

Most shops are open on Sunday, so people who work in such retail environments are likely to be involved already. Its also clear that people like to go shopping on Sunday, especially when for many the weekend is likely the only chance they get, so its nice that it can be spread across the two days, rather than it being super busy on Saturday.

I think the people most likely to lose out are the small traders who are exempt from the laws. I've often had to go to a small local trader or a Tesco Express when main shops are closed... but saying that, giving money to Tesco is hardly a small trader.

Its interesting that the law will be suspended for 8 weeks during the Olympics, so that also goes to show that it seems out of date.

I doubt there'll be any increase in revenue for the government. There's only so much money people will spend over the week.

More people will get to work a few extra hours on a Sunday. Lucky them.

If you can't find time to buy what you want with all the hours shops are open already then you must be very busy.

I know the shops shut at 4pm so if I need anything I make sure I buy it before 4pm. This has never been an issue in my eyes.

Antiquated load of old nonsense and the sooner everything operates on a Sunday just as it does every other day of the week the better IMO.

Everyday is busy, so it doesnt matter.

The country is in a bad way?

Well the shops seem to be busy everyday, so people can't be that bad off and the shops can't be that bad off.

Even the sunday trading times are limited, it's still as busy

People still work on Sundays, shops and services are still running, it's not really a day of rest.

But I do believe people do need a rest a day or two, let people work whenever they want, but make sure they still get their days off.

Agreed. People should be free to chose when they work. Very few offices open on the weekend so this will mostly affect supermarkets and shops. When I worked in ASDA I would have been grateful for the extra hours.

Also I used to work in care and we never got Sundays off so I don't see why a different section of the population need to have their hands held and told "you're not allowed to".
