I'm not too fussed about Sunday trading, but I'd like to see extended opening hours on the high street beyond 5-5.30pm. Over the Christmas period some towns do this one day a week. The only reason why I don't use the high street now is because everything is closed as I work office hours apart from on weekends where it's far too busy to consider it. If more could be done in the week then I don't think Sunday trading would be an issue.

I wish banks were open on a Saturday and Sunday, such a pain that they keep rubbish operating hours (ie. the same times that I work).

We've got it reasonably good here, most banks open Saturday mornings. A couple of weeks a ago, one of my clients who is Spanish told me the banks there open from 8am and close around 2pm Mon - Fri. Means if you work during those hours you're royally s****** should a situation arise.

The Sunday Trading Act 1994 needs to be scrapped. The benefits include increased revenue for the government, more people will be in work and more flexibility for people to buy products on a weekend.

Discuss.

Disadvantages include workplaces who request/suggest/force staff to work all day and night Sunday. Little enough time for family life with a 9-5 let alone lose the weekends etc.
Small business and family run enterprises, will find it harder to cope and compete as they can't or won't remain open all days of the year also.

What a coincidence! I was out just this afternoon and wanted to get something from Sainsbury's, but they were closing at 5. Thought then that the Sunday rule is stupid. Should just be like any other day.

An antiquated law that should be scrapped. They did it with the pubs.

I'm happy with the way it is, if you can't organise your life to buy food and clothing when we have 24 hour shopping during the week, then there is something wrong with you.

I'd probably support banning shopping on Sunday, I've probably only been in town on a Sunday a few times in years. Exactly how much stuff do people need?

Disagree, Sunday is the day of rest. Need to keep some traditions.

I agree with this, you have 6 other days to buy stuff etc. When i were a lad shops were open 5 1/2 days a week (half day wednesday). Nowadays, they even open on xmas day, again, which i disagree with. I'm in the catering trade and i have young children, this year i am expected to work on xmas day and miss xmas day with my family .

I'm alright Jack so sod the rest...

I simply cannot get my head around why you would vote not to scrap them. Having Sunday as a forced day off is a hangover from religion and has nothing to do with a modern society.

All the arguments about retail staff not then getting the time off doesn't make any sense to me. You have your hours to work per week, why does it make any difference?

most retail staff are needed after 5pm on a weekday and on weekends. This means that the most time we get to spend with our families during the day is on a sunday.
Now, if you wanted to scrap sunday hours and close all retail stores at 5 on a weekday.. all for it.

What's your problem? Sunday trading used to be banned altogether, now you have most of the day to get out of bed and buy more stuff.
I'm supposed to feel sorry for people who can't be bothered to organise themselves?

I work Monday to Friday and I don't want the Sunday trading laws scrapped. I have enough time on a weekend to pop to the shops if I fancy it (I never do)

If I was still in retail like I was at uni, I'd have hated it! You'd never get a rest, Monday to Friday uni and then all weekend working? No thanks
