Used to love RTS. AoE2. CnC series etc but never really tried supcom...

Pros and cons GO GO GO :D

After that AoE thread I'm thinking about this too but I'm not really a fan of robot style RTS's and I can barely handle Kanes Waft as it is. Wish it was on Steam, or a demo available.

sup com is a good game and rts (the forged alliance mod makes it better) there is quite a bit of micro management involved managing the resources. It can sometimes feel like the lower level units are a waste and its all a rush to get the big units.

YES!

Edit: pro's
Base building, lots of units, lots of variation in strategy you can use. Very fun when you get into it. Best with a mate on a Lan. Huge battles
Con's
None

In my opinion, definitely.

Pros:

Massive gameplay, without the use of mods, you can have a 1000 unit cap. However, unlike other RTSs, this is literally a 1000 unit cap, each unit, be it a lowly T1 unit, a factory, or a stomping great monkeylord costs 1 unit cap.

Massive maps, the maps you play on actually require strategic thinking, they can be anywhere up to 81x81 km. those maps take the fastest surveillance aircraft over a minute to get from corner to corner.

Experimental (T4) units, no doubt you've seen the monkeylord along with the other experimentals . . . if not, go and take a look, it's all you need!

Multiplayer, multiplayer games is where Supcom comes into its own. Playing against the AI is all very well, but there is nothing like the challenge of battling another human. I have played games that took nearly four hours before now, and that was on a medium size map.

Sorian AI mod, If you don't have friends to play against, the mod is needed, the Sorian AI ups the difficulty of the AI something chronic, and makes the AI adaptive. More adaptive than Supcoms own so-called "Adaptive" AI

Cons:

System, you do need a good system to handle it.

AI, the in-built AI is pretty rubbish in my opinion, the adaptive AI is hard, but I havn't seen much of it's adaptiveness. The Sorian AI mod I mentioned above easily remedies this though

I can't think of any more cons off the top of my head, but then I am somewhat biased, I love the game!

In what way did Forged Alliance ruin the game? There is no resource gathering as such in the game to start with. I also still get huge battles, though like I mentioned before, I do use the Sorian AI, and human opponents are always good for huge battles.

I was exaggerating a bit but resource generation (mass and energy income) is definately a lot slower in forged alliance, and assisted building is a lot slower too. You used to be able to literally cause mayhem in the old game, launching 25 strategic nukes at once and making armies of experimentals. Doing that now would take hours.

Definitely a good game! It kills my PC later on in a match when there are a shed load of units doing things and can get very hectic!

Ahhh, I see where you were going with the lack of massive battles now, we tend to play with double resources on. Which is probably why I havn't noticed the lack of resources as much.

Just thought of another con, I have found that the game tends to slow down late game. I don't mean the gameplay, but the actual game. 1 second of gametime can take some time in real life if there's too much going on.

Just bought it (sup com only) off D2D for £15. Its 5GB though so I'll have to install and check it out tonight when I get home from work :/

How does this 1000 unit cap and massive map run? Im thinking of trying it ...

4 gig ram
q6600 (stock (i knoowwww))
ATI 4870 1 gig

I presume it will run well, but when ur talking about a 1000 units etc. doesnt it make ur computer cry?

^
I run a dual core @ 3.7GHz, 4GB and a 4870 1GB and expect 1000 units to kill my PC. Doesn't SC utilise multi-cores? I recall that it was one of the games that does this pretty well so you could be fine. Of course weather you get that far unit count wise is another story.

That is true, but a lot of ppl above have been saying the games take time and also what if you have multiple players 4 v 4, 6 v 6? is there a different unit cap?
