Super Unleaded - i cant see the point - who runs it?

Would you recognise detonation if you heard it?

Only from what people describe it as marbles in a tin type of noise, I have a nice quiet exhaust on mine so the engine can be heard under full chat and it sounds sweet as a nut very smooth. No different with either grade of petrol, the 300zx ecu learns and balances itself apparently and unless your running higher boost which i'm not its fine to run 95.

I run 98 because it a) it says to on the fuel cap and b) I have a 98ron map on it anyway. My car sometimes doesn't start first time in a morning with 95 either.. On the motorway I got about 47mpg at 70mph but around 40 with 95.

With aircon on full whack I only get 32mpg anyway :(

Yeah I tried it the other day when I was on the M1, when I turned it to half it rose by about 5mpg and on one bar it went to about 40mpg

It shouldnt move at all maybe 1-2MPG, but overall it doesnt on my Clio.

47MPG at 70 seems a lot aswell, i struggle to get 45 at 60-65.

I put it in my bike, because at 17 litres a time I don't notice the difference to my wallet, and so why not :) I guess I like to believe the marketing that it has better/more detergents in it. I know it doesn't give me any more power or anything like that though

Well it does :p

At 60 I was getting 52mpg on the trip comp :)

Lucky you! I'm hovering on 27MPG right now :p

Stupid stop go Gosport traffic!

Was much better at my old workplace, 11am start 7pm finish so avoided all congestion and returned 41MPG weekly!

I think the ultimate answer to the thread is that in the United States the max (AFAIK) octane rating they have is around 93 and here in the UK I have yet to see less then 95 and again AFAIK there is no real difference to the cars engines shipped to both the EU and US except maybe some emission controls but that is mostly the exhaust system that is changed and performace cars don't really change major engine components across different continents.

US octane is based on PON now more refered to as AKI not RON so 93 MON is pretty much 97 RON.

RON = research octane number which is a halfway house between Motor Octane Number and Pump Octane Number.

So i dont think thats really an ultimate answer in the post above.

US pumps display PON, UK pumps display RON. PON = (RON + MON)/2.

Nonsense your trip computer is way out then. I've never seen or heard MPG like that from a 172

May aswell get a 6 pot now, didn't you buy a 318 for the economy?. 27 is what my 320i managed in the same sort of stop go traffic.

Nope, don't think it is. It's usually around 30mpg with stop start and mixed driving..

Mates cup with a standard map was getting 49mpg, measured from starting on the slip road. Not hard to achieve really on an empty motorway with no braking and a steady pace.

Just done a search on cliosport and quite a few people have had over 50 on their 172/182's.. driving like pussies, but still! Let's say -5 for the dodgy French electronics which is still good economy for a 2.0!

Oh yea you definetely can't argue the economy they achieve for what the engine is.

I managed 45 driving like a complete pussy, must try harder. Managed 38 to Harrogate the other day 100 mile round trip this was driving like a maniac though so I'm happy with that.

It settles to 32-33 normal town driving/some A road.

They probably load cars with different maps for the engine to suit the country the car is going to. Land Rover do that, so I assume other manufacturers could well do it too.

WRT the super / normal unleaded point, I used to use super (Shell Optimax usually) when I had my Impreza; that had a noticeable improvement in performance and pulled more smoothly compared to running on normal unleaded. The mpg was sufficiently improved as well that it cost no more to run it on super.

Never had super make any noticeable difference in NA cars though.

Fill mine up with V Power only - 1 because I have the citi mastercard 2 my car is mapped for super, don't notice any mpg gain really but when I changed my map from the bluefin to dreamscience 97+ map there was a definite change, the engine got a bit smoother and revved that little bit freer so i'm sure if I was to use normal unleaded there would be a noticable effect, not really on speed but just the smoothness of the engine.
