Supplements the debate/discussion thread

Personally id rank bcaa's more than pwo supps. I recover better and muscles look fuller.

As for jack3d tingling, that's down to the beta alanine and is perfectly natural.

Yeah but am trying to eat a clean diet and I thought any sugar at all was bad because of an insulin spike, if I had of bought the jam I would have just put one tea spoon on my oats in this morning.

Thought someone said keep em low all day and then have dextrose in post workout drink to get your insulin spike. Because I eat selected foods of my choice I can pretty much keep sugar out of my diet completely.

Does that mean I can't have doughnuts? :'(

As this is becoming a bit of a food thread (we kinda need one perhaps) I'll put this in here.

I'm going to try an experiment either tonight or soon. It sounds a bit weird but I've read it works quite nicely.

Bean mash.

Yeah I'm not totally convinced either. The idea is that you fry the beans off and then mash them in a frying pan. It's meant to be an awesome mega slow carb mash potato substitute, but we'll have to see. If it goes horribly wrong I'll just add chilli and pretend it was meant to be something else (might do that anyway...). For backup I also have home made chips on standby.

Sounds a bit like refried beans. Get some nice spices in there and it'll probably be lovely. I sometimes make a curried Dhal with some red lentils. Can have it as a meal with some rice and meat, or just as a snack during the say.

EAA's are the amino's that the body cannot produce and must be gotten from food. There are 20 in total 12 / 8 split essential/non essential I think or it might be the other way round 8/12.

I can't remember which ones the essential are so do some reading and see what you get with each. Either buy them capped or buy a capping kit because they are unpleasant to say the least.

Pre-workout supps for today:

6 eggs, scambled
4 rashers of bacon
2 slices of toasted brown bread
a little grated cheese
large handful of spinach

:D

Shame the gym session was a little limp, abandoned it after warming up for squats as I was still aching from my game yesterday. I must have looked like a bit of a weirdo, someone comes in, slaps some chalk about, rattles the squat rack for a couple of mins and then does some really obscure movements with a cable machine*:o

*rotator cuff stuff and bicep rehab

Who all takes BCAA's? / rates them well?

Whats the cheapest way to get them (in capsules preferably, I hear they taste horrible).

Are they good for a man on a diet looking to keep lean mass, are they effective?

If you do some reading up on how they work and what they do it'd be a good idea. It's very interesting and not complex at all :) There's a 4 page article somewhere that was interesting, think it was on bodybuilding.com, use your google skills.

I've taken EAA's which are FAR worse. BCAA's are easily bearable. They take a while to mix in about 5 minutes so you need to give them a good shake. You'll become accustomed to the taste after a while.

Grab them from MP in powdered form.

Hard to rate them as I've recently changed my routine and dietary habits but they do help to stop catabolism and increase PS so are good when cutting or doing any fasted exercises. Also good intra-workout too.

Just received 4kg of Premium Whey from BodybuildingWarehouse today. Top service from them for the second time Ive used shopped there.

Got the Choc Cookie flavour and is certainly quite nice. £40 for 4kg is a good price IMO. Better than the 5kg bags of impact whey I normally get from MP

Depending on the whey protein you use, if any, you might not benefit from extra BCAA supplementation because leucine, isoleucine and valine are already present, albeit in smaller quantities.

What I'm saying is it might be better value for money buying better quality protein which already contains decent quantities of BCAA rather than buying it separately, as from what I can remember it can be quite expensive.

Sorry I can't give any opinion on BCAAs themselves as I've never taken them in standalone form.

Is it true that Whey protean Top brands like ON, BSN, PHD...etc can kill your liver and kidney after 5-12 months ?

in other words, use it for 2 months then stop for a year ?

I am new to supplements.

Roffle. I used Phd Whey for over a year and I'm not dead afaik. I've been using it (whey) non stop for 3 years now and I'm perfectly fine. Whey is just broken down dairy. So if dairy kills your liver & kidneys then I guess you'd be right. It's not the whey itself that is claimed to do the damage but the continuosly high levels of protein in the diet. I've yet to see a study proving this though.

Imo theres high protein then theres HIGH PROTEIN. I've known people to consume up to and over 600g of protein a day. Continuous high protein in the diet is hugely beneficial imo not just for muscle building purposes but also for recovery of muscle, damaged tissues and what not.

Imo high protein does put strain on the kidneys to some extent but the kidneys can cope with this perfectly fine, I think that if you had kidney disease or malfunction then high protein could effect that, but perfectly healthy kidneys I see no problem.

It's like the liver and alcohol, as alcohol is a toxin/poison the liver does get damaged by this, but the liver repairs/regenerates assuming the liver is healthy so theres no issue. Alough protein and alcohol are on completely different levels just trying to use a comparrison.

I wouldn't worry about protein intake as benny says I've also used high protein levels for a long time. I'd be more inclined to say that the crap you eat such as the fast food rubbish kebabs, chips and kfc's are far more damaging to the body then high protein could ever be.
