Well, some of you can remember my thread about me buying a new car.

Well, I have just come into some more money, and I dont have to worry about selling my old car. My mum is buying it, and paying extra to keep the stereo installed

I have always had a hankering for Supra's, to me they just exude class and I have to have one. However, a friend of mine has been trying to convert me to the Wankel way of life. I know our dear friend Drexel has a Rex, but what are other people's opinions on them? I know they are fantastic gas guzzlers, but there has to be more to them than that....right?

So calling all Toyota and Mazda fanboys, let the discussion commence!

I think if I had the money and chance out of the two it would be the RX7.

The Supra just looks a bit fat and lardy.

the supra is more of a gt car compared to that of the sporty rx7... so depends what you're after.. personally it'd be the supra every time :)

The Rex is a little more focused as a sports car. The Wankel obviously needs a little more looking after, but when you're in the market for that kind of car you really ought to expect that.

Besides, the Rex actually looks half decent. From '93 onwards, the Supra only really had one thing going for it in my book - the engine was bloody tough :)

I really can't decide which one I'd get either. I think the best course of action would be to look at both and just buy the CAR that you like the best, not the model.

But thats the sex about it though! the gorgeous wide arse of it

If I knew which one I liked, I wouldn't have to ask this question :p

Depends what you want from a car. If you want straight line power or to throw your car around some bends.

I have never driven either but I just see the RX7 a better car for some bendy roads.

both are cool, I've owned two supras and would reccomend them as long as you require zero praticality, rex's are lush but reliability can be a large factor with rebuilds being an expensive cost to factor into the equation.

Buy a UK supra if you can cheaper insurance, leather and decent brakes.

Or go for a US import for a nice fast one ;)

Hate leather seats, but thats just a personal preference :p

They are both fantastic cars, but it depends what you want really. Last year I drove a mate's 380bhp 6-Speed Supra from my house to JAE and back again, so I had a fair bit of time behind the wheel. Nice car, hides it's weight quite well, but it does feel more of a GT than the Rex. It has a nice torquey engine, and corners pretty damn well for such a heavy car, but I definately prefer the drive of the Rex.

The Rex just feels more focused, more hardcore. It's lighter on it's feet, more chuckable, and you just feel more 'plugged in'. The feedback from the Rex is just sublime, to coin an old cliche you really do feel like you are running your hands along the tarmac. It's just more of a drivers car than the Supra, a real sports car as apposed to the fast GT that is the Supra. So much so that I think the Supra would suit the auto-box better than the 6-speed I drove, and I'm not a fan of autos.

Also there was no contest as far as brakes go, remember the RX7 held the world record for the fastest stopping production car when it first came out.

I also much prefer the interior of the Rex. Some think it's clostrophobic, but I love it. It just wraps around you, you almost feel like you are in the cockpit of a fighter plane.

Reliability wise, the Supra wins hands down of course, but there is no real need for the Rex to be massively unreliable if it has had a recent rebuild, but it does need a little more looking after.

Neither cars will cheap to run, but I think the Supra will give marginally better fuel economy.

As for tuning, you can get more power out of the Supra for less money, but remember the Rex is lighter, so for similar power the Rex will be the faster car.

All in all I would choose the Rex every time, but that's because I prefer the character of the car, it's also rarer that the Supra. They are both great cars though, you wouldn't be dissapointed in either.

why on earth would you want a US import?

Depends what you want from it tbh, I think the RX7 looks a little awkward from stock, stock spoiler being truly awful. Doesn't take much to turn it into a sexy mother though, just look at drexels one.

Supra's are cool, very good engines, very naff interior though. For optimum looks, needs to be black, running on dished 19's, scraping the ground, have the late model skirts, deeper front bumper and TRD spoiler.
The choice of performance mods for the supra is immense, some very nice twin turbo kits out there which will give you a really fantastic power band, im not a fan of those enormous bucket sized lag monster T88's that people put on them, unusable power unless you only run at drag strips.

I don't know much about the mazda's 13B engine but I gather its a real peach, the car is certainly a much nimbler sports car than the supra thats for sure.

As a little footnote, don't discard the 300zx, they are brilliant too ;)

Supra, RX7, 300ZX. All awsome cars, never driven any, but have had a ride in a Supra Twin Turbo.

Another suggestion, just my 2p.

It's a bit older, and not sure about budget. Skyline R32?

Doing a little searching, the supra is fastest to 60 (apparantly).

I prefer the look of the Supra, but I like the eliteness idea of the RX-7

competant cars in their own right, but not really the same as the the others suggested here. Sexy FR coupes vs. Ugly 4wd family wagon :/

Supra TT 6 speed would get my vote. No one can argue that the RX7 is an ugly tbh. It looks better to me. I have driven both recently and I absoloutely love both. Its a very hard choice for me, but what makes me prefer the Supra is its bulletproof engine which is torquey as **** and so tuneable, the 6 speed getrag gearbox and its speed.
As Drexel mentioned, the RX7 cockpit is very small, and I felt slightly claustrophobic and the engine reminded me of a vacuum cleaner.
The best thing you can do it go and test drive 2 similar cars i.e. both manuals with the same amount of HP/mods. Seriously tought choice though.

Thanks a lot guys!

Now looking at Pistonheads, some Skylines are in my price range.....thanks a lot guys!

RX no question.

Supra's pah! Ugly, common as muck, boat like and boring. Untill you spend about £5k on them - then they're ugly, common as muck, boat like and boring after a two month honeymoon period with the power.
