Square Enix Ltd., the publisher of Square Enix interactive entertainment products in Europe and other PAL territories (Square Enix), today announces that Square Enix, Inc., a U.S. sister company headquartered in Los Angeles, California, and development house Gas Powered Games Corp., a U.S. company headquartered in Redmond, Washington (Gas Powered Games) have formed a strategic partnership. With the commencement of this strategic partnership, development has begun on Supreme Commander 2, a sequel to the award-winning real-time strategy series.

Interesting combination...

i Just soiled my self, in happy, as long as it retains the scale and maybe gets bigger i will be a sucker for it. I dont care if it takes years for cpus to catch up to the game.

Somewhat bizarre. Maybe they want to emulate the success of games like Starcraft in Asia. Square Enix have a very good rep over there and would increase asian interest.

I thought this was more of the opposite of squenix try to expand into the west and with a larger portfolio of games. They already have many different medias to rely on in the east. I'm just hoping this publisher will give better support to supcom2 than thq gave to the first one. Taken many months of debate for a much needed patch for forged alliance.

Well I'm extremely happy to see a sequel to such a fantastic RTS, but Square Enix as a partner?

Perhaps a slightly more "Gundam" theme and "hero" units with level-up stuff?

I think Square will be working on the backend story, and GPG will do the most the game engine, units balance ect. The background story was prob the weakest part of SupCom, so getting a FF type storyline with SupCom gameplay should be amazing.

Let's hope they sort the performance this time. The simspeed in the original and even more so in Forged Alliance was shocking, and it's use of multithreaded processors could be improved upon also. In fact a x64 version would be nice considering how much memory the larger maps eat up :)

Game was way before its time, so current hardware struggled, and new harder wasnt fully compatable as the game was already finished by then :/

Just like TA was back in the day lol.

Simspeed is the game engine thread that related to AI performance in the game. In SC and SC:FA it was broken so the games with AI in always ground to a total crawl. Some of the guys on the forums released mods that drastically improved matters by fixing the bugs and rewriting the AI... but they shouldn't have had to.

FA support especially so was dropped very quickly and the faithful fans have been waiting now for a patch to fix these issue now since about this time last year. I suspect they are waiting in vain as it will never arrive. Shame as for me SC:FA is the best RTS game ever made, especially so in coop lan games.

Indeed, SC:FA is a brilliant game - many a massive game was had last year with house mates - we could often get 4 of us playing and the FFAs were just crazy, even the 2v2s were a good game as when we mixed up the players the balance was good :)

Am looking forward to SC II - just hope they don't reduce any of the scale as that's what keeps me coming back to it ... the sheer size of the game at times and yet it isn't overwhelming in my opinion which makes for a great experience!

Whilst you are entirely correct, there has been a change recently. Sorian (the guy who makes the essential sorianAI mod[for people who enjoy going against AI]) leaked that the patch is being produced now and will definatly be released. Rumours of it being a big patch due to the cancellation of the planned second experimentals expansion.

As for sc2, it's a long long way away for now, and everyone can only hope it doesn't break the game. With chris taylor still being the guy making it i hope it means it will stay true to his desires which are what the fans want really.

Apart from fixing SC's flaws, I think some more game modes would be welcome:

King of the Hill (self-explanatory)

Survival (hold out as long as possible against increasingly tougher off-map attack waves)

Monument (build and defend an expensive structure much like the Wonders in AOE2)

Capture and hold the relics (again, like the one in AOE2)

Resource gathering (generate specified amount of mass\energy before anyone else)

All with time limits\timers where appropriate.

That's great news. If they fix the simspeed I'll be more than happy to dust off my copy of FA and have LAN games again. Sorian's AI was one of the things that kept me coming back although each release did seem to play quite different to the last. I've not tried it in 6 months so perhaps it's time to revisit FA :)

Great news! I still play FA regularly with friends, never bothered with the single player campaign that much, but as a multiplayer game its still brilliant :)
