Standard procedure with almost all cards I'm afraid. For reference eVGA do an 'advanced RMA' with their cards (hopefully they do it still?) where you pay in advance for the card and once your card has been sent and confirmed as faulty then you are refunded this said amount. I'm sure a few on here have used it successfully and only leaves you without a card for a few days.
Personally I'm kinda glad that Intel chips have a built-in gpu for these very occasions, once I go AMD I bet a card goes bloody pop on me!!!
