Is linux really worth swapping to as im a complete beginner and run quite a lot of windows based apps, but I also hear that linux is the way forward and that is more stable and reliable than windows.
Hmmmm... i see, well i use, Steam for my games like css and hl2, photoshop cs2 i also use it but i think there something called gimp or something for linux but it isnt the same as photoshop so i really need photoshop and ventrilo for my gaming and general chatting too.
Yeah I think if your a hardcore gamer linux is a bad choice. css/hl2 run over Cedega (emulation) but the performance won't be as good as native.
Gimp is ok, but is not really in the same league as photoshop I think. Not sure if ventrillo has a linux version. General chatting is fine there are loads of IM/irc clients out there.
Yeah, gaming under Linux you're gonna run into some problems sooner or later, as only a handful of games are ported to Linux, and only some will run under emulation (Cedega*).
However, there's nothing to stop you from dual-booting - using Linux whenever you're not gaming, and rebooting into Windows when you are. Or, as Una says, using a LiveCD or even installing VMWare or Microsoft's VirtualPC and installing Linux to play and learn.
Using Linux is a great operating system, imo. If you're interested in learning about using your PC in a non-Microsoft way, then give it a go. It's free after all, so it won't cost you anything but your time
*I know Cedega/Wine Is Not Emulation, but it's easier for most peeps to understand
Dual boot. Thats the answer. Find a distro you like, Ubuntu or Suse tend to be good beginner distros.
I have separate hard drives and dual boot. Only use windows for games. Use Linux for everything else.
One tip I can give you. Be patient to learn to ropes. Don't run Linux for 10 mins and decide you do or don't like it. Spend some time with it, read up on it, if you use ubuntu try ubuntuguide.org and the like. You will love it like I do. Good luck
Ubuntu is really nice, been using linux a long time here (~10 years) and tried many many distro's and Ubuntu is by far and away the best for me at the moment. Depends what you plan to do really. I went through a phase of just playing around/breaking things to learn with other distro's gentoo/arch but now I just want things to work - so Ubuntu is a good choice. Though my hate for rpm based distro's seems to bias me.
As for stability between the two OS's.
Linux never crashes for me and I never have any reliability issues, but then again I have never had Windows XP crash on me in all the time I've used it.
